From what I gather they were rivals of a sort?

Well their paths may have crossed, but after her separation Diana travelled a lot and it's unlikely that they developed any kind of relationship.

Diana and Charles split in 1992. According to wikipedia, Edward and Sophie began dating in 1993. Their paths may not have crossed much. Diana would also have been busy with her children at that time.
