How long before the media and general public abandon the 'Queen Consort' title and refer to Camilla simply as 'The Queen' ?

I'd venture that it is an inevitable step but may not happen for a while yet. Everybody knows that Camilla is Consort so we don't need reminding every time she and King Charles are in the news. Plus, the 'King and Queen' trips off the tongue more readily than the 'King and Queen Consort'. I am confident this abridged title will be accepted eventually.

They had royal expert type on tv this week saying the consort part is used to differentiate from queen regnum (elizabeth) and that months after funeral it will revert to just Queen as by then it will be obvious its camilla being spoken of and not Elizabeth... so they seemed to be saying its just to differentiate during transition period

Discovereads · 19/09/2022 21:48

I’ve seen “Queen Camilla” already. I think that will be the preferred instead of the Queen because it’s really the King now.

NuffSaidSam · 19/09/2022 21:49

I think the Queen consort bit will be dropped altogether and she'll just be plain old Camilla again amongst the general public. The media may go for Queen, but I doubt it.

Wont make a difference really

KangarooKenny · 19/09/2022 21:50

She will never be queen to me, just consort or Camilla.
For some reason I always say Camilla the gorilla - must have heard it on tv or somewhere.

heartbroken22 · 19/09/2022 21:52

There's always only been one queen for me and always will be and she's gone. Don't think Camilla wants to be 'queen'. She's happy to tag along.

Roomytrouser · 19/09/2022 21:52

Off topic sorry but but why wasn’t Philip called “king”?

FlippertyGibberts · 19/09/2022 21:52

I've already started calling her Queen Camilla, because that's what she is.

iekanda · 19/09/2022 21:53

I don't think consort will be dropped. The media are fairly careful to use the correct titles.

Redglitter · 19/09/2022 21:56

I've seen her referred to as The Queen on several things so far. I think now the funeral has passed it'll become more common. The Queen mother was never really referred to as consort when she was Queen

I've seen Kate increasingly being referred to as Princess Kate. I think that'll become more common

KindergartenKop · 19/09/2022 21:56

@Roomytrouser a King outranks a Queen (see the patriarchy) so a reigning Queen can't have her consort named as King. It was a bit of an issue with Victoria and Albert but they compromised on 'Prince'.

Cuck00soup · 19/09/2022 21:57

When Newspapers discussed The King's grandparents they called them the King and Queen. And so it will be for Charles and Camilla.

The Sun will do it first and a few pedants will continue with "The Queen Consort" actually. The rest of us will think they are barking.

Because King comes above Queen in order and the Queen had to be above him as she was the monarch. I believe she did ask about him being King Consort and was advised not to.

Like anything like that, you'll see her as Queen Consort when it's official, but anything else will be just Queen.
She's grown on me. She looks like she supports King Charles without trying to get in the limelight. Happy for her to be Queen.

HansZimmerframe · 19/09/2022 21:58

A bit off topic, but can anyone tell me why Prince Phillip was never King?

Because 'King' outranks 'Queen', and so Phillip could not have this title.

I heard her be referred to as queen by a television commentator a few days after Queen Elizabeth died, another commentator corrected him though.

Because King trumps Queen, if you marry a Queen you can't have a bigger title than her

I don't think consort will be dropped. The media are fairly careful to use the correct titles.

The Queen is her correct title- the "consort" but is used whilst HM QEII was still being talked about on a daily basis.
Queen Mary was Queen Consort at first, as was Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. (She would have continued to be known as Queen Elizabetb after her husband's death if The Queen hadn't had the same name as her - it was just to differentiate- much as"consort" is used for now to differentiate.

Pyewhacket · 19/09/2022 22:03

Until the coronation.

EdithWeston · 19/09/2022 22:03

About a week ago, when Penny Mordaunt in The Privy Council on the day of the Proclamation - surely the most correct of places - called her simply The Queen.

So I think now that the late Queen is buried, and the chances of confusion about which is meant when Queen is being discussed, everyone else will follow the example already set

WildRosie · 19/09/2022 22:04

Thanks all. General consensus for what I see as a common sense, if not obvious, approach.

And me..but I was wondering earlier how long the consort but will last.
maybe til the coronation?

ivykaty44 · 19/09/2022 22:05

Could be Queen is dropped and Consort stays

VariationsonaTheme · 19/09/2022 22:07

I think we’ve had a lifetime of referring to Charles and Camilla, and many will go on calling them just that, without referring to him as the King.
