How long before the media and general public abandon the 'Queen Consort' title and refer to Camilla simply as 'The Queen' ?

I'd venture that it is an inevitable step but may not happen for a while yet. Everybody knows that Camilla is Consort so we don't need reminding every time she and King Charles are in the news. Plus, the 'King and Queen' trips off the tongue more readily than the 'King and Queen Consort'. I am confident this abridged title will be accepted eventually.

Could be Queen is dropped and Consort stays

Eh? Consort is not a title.

From Coronation onwards she'll just be The Queen I am sure, because she'll be crowned, but I imagine it'll be creeping in over the next few months.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/09/2022 22:08

Charles is the king. Camilla is the queen, so she will be called Queen Camilla like the Queen Mother was simply called Queen Elizabeth when her husband was alive.

I think we’ve had a lifetime of referring to Charles and Camilla, and many will go on calling them just that, without referring to him as the King.

I agree. Younger people /kids will probably find it easier to use the King and Queen

A while maybe. Ask Kate Middleton.

Anyone else struggling to stop saying ‘Prince Charles’ rather than ‘King Charles’? Also really hard not to add ‘spaniel’ on the end there too.

Off topic sorry but but why wasn’t Philip called “king”?

Sexism. He should have been. King Consort.

I don't think consort will be dropped. The media are fairly careful to use the correct titles.

No they are not ! They often write "Kate Middleton " 😂😂

Grin I keep going to say ‘King Charles Cavalier’ instead of plain old King Charles.

To be fair, I’ve met a hell of a lot more spaniels than I have monarchs.

Does anyone know, when it's Kate's turn to don the crown will she just be 'queen' without the consort part?

No she'll also be a consort.

There's always only been one queen for me and always will be and she's gone. Don't think Camilla wants to be 'queen'. She's happy to tag along.

This in spades. Camilla is more than happy to just be in the background, albeit as Queen of course. Although I do hope we hear more from her, she comes across as very likeable.

MolliciousIntent · 19/09/2022 23:24

KangarooKenny · 19/09/2022 21:50

She will never be queen to me, just consort or Camilla.
For some reason I always say Camilla the gorilla - must have heard it on tv or somewhere.

Or is it just because you're deeply unpleasant?

Justleaveitblankthen · 19/09/2022 23:34

I think the PP who asked the 'King' question has got the point now 😂
Wonder what Camilla's title will be if she outlives Charles? Queen Mother-in-law? 😀

Dowager Queen?

mdinbc · 19/09/2022 23:44

Dowager Queen is correct. I just looked it up. Women do tend to outlive their husbands, but King Charles comes from some very long-lived genes! He could be king for another 30 years if he lives as long as his parents.

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 20/09/2022 00:41

I already call Camilla 'The Queen.' Hopefully it won't be long till it becomes our regular way of speaking about her.

SenecaFallsRedux · 20/09/2022 02:07

If she outlives Charles, she will be the queen dowager, but she will be referred to simply as Queen Camilla. The only reason that Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother needed to have Queen Mother after her name was to distinguish between her and her daughter Elizabeth II. Queen Mary, the late Queen's grandmother, was alive when Elizabeth came to the throne, and she was referred to simply as Queen Mary.

PizzaFunghi · 20/09/2022 08:20

The first day or two, I heard the BBC calling her Queen Camilla, and then after that, they reverted to Queen Consort, or just her name. So I assume that that was a deliberate change in language. I woudln't be surprised if it comes back at some point, once it's clear that people don't mean Queen Elizabeth. Either they might start Queen Camilla, or eventually just the Queen.

😁I've seen 'Camilla Parker-Bowles' used on here during the last week!

PuttingDownRoots · 20/09/2022 08:31

I cant se local newspapers saying "Queen consort to visit St Bloggs Primary today". It will definitely say "The Queen to visit".

Antarcticant · 20/09/2022 08:31

She's still 'The Queen Consort' on the official royal website.

MrsEricBana · 20/09/2022 09:19

Officially "the Queen Consort" and "Queen Camilla" are correct but she isn't "the Queen". Princess Catherine would similarly become "the Queen Consort" and "Queen Catherine". So neither would be "the Queen".

This is not precisely true. She is a queen consort as opposed to a queen regnant, but she is The Queen. For now they are using Queen Consort to distinguish her from the late Queen, but she is The Queen as were Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother).

The only person in British history to have Consort as part of an official title is Prince Albert, who was made Prince Consort by Queen Victoria.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 20/09/2022 15:41

Her role is Queen Consort as opposed to Queen Regnant (like HM QEII).

The correct title for a Queen Consort is HM Queen [First Name] or while her husband is alive HM The Queen. Once her husband is dead she may also be known as the dowager queen or HM Queen [First Name], but she can't use "The".

I doubt the press would use "Queen Consort" in the way they are doing if it weren't to avoid confusion with the late Queen, or to appease the haters who never wanted Camilla to be a Queen. It will be dropped gradually and we will hear "the King and Queen" or Queen Camilla.

I don't think Kate will ever be known as Queen Consort in this way, she will just be Queen Catherine in the way the Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra were.
