Supermarket extra busy

Just been to Aldi and M and S and couldn't find a single car park space.
Had to go to Morrisons.

Seems to be extra busy here today. I know I was there too so it is hypocritical but I normally go on a Sunday morning and it isn't this busy.

The shops are shut for a day so everyione is stocking up. And people on here yesterday were talking about having afternoon tea so getting clotted cream etc.
Presumably the yellow sticker /oops sections should be something to behold though.

SlipperyLizard · 18/09/2022 14:17

We naively drove over to our nearest sainsburys & it was v much like the Christmas chaos in the car park that usually makes me avoid it! But it didn’t seem too bad inside (although we do the scan & shop so no queues), it is just poorly designed once lots of people are in the car park.

Ilikewinter · 18/09/2022 14:20

Yep our Tesco looked like xmas!

Rummikub · 18/09/2022 14:31

Went yesterday to Tesco. Shelves were bare! All the bin bags pretty much gone. Toilet rolls looked like pandemic level demand.

Noteverybodylives · 18/09/2022 14:32

I always do my weekly shop on a Sunday.

I stupidly thought that the shops might be slightly busier but not as bad as they are.

You can’t get into any of the carparks.
It took me 30mins just to get out of the car park without even going into the shop.

I don’t believe that all of these extra people normally do their shop on a Monday.

It’s my own fault but I genuinely thought that with the past couple of years people have learnt not to panic buy.

MinervaTerrathorn · 18/09/2022 14:35

I think even Tesco Express are closed until 5pm, so worse than Easter.

Plumbear2 · 18/09/2022 14:14

Aldi closes at 4pm on Sunday. It won't be open this evening.

PP might not be in England. Aldi is open until 8pm in Scotland.

chocolateisavegetable · 18/09/2022 14:40

I had my shopping delivered by Tesco this morning. Only one substitution which was just the same item but a different brand, so absolutely fine. I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near a supermarket today!

VladmirsPoutine · 18/09/2022 14:40

Is anyone else getting March 2020 flashbacks?

AliasGrape · 18/09/2022 14:41

if you normally do your shopping on a Monday and the shop is planning to close on Monday, you'll go on Sunday instead. If everyone who normally shops on a Monday does the same, then Sunday will be anything up to twice as busy

This!
I was planning on going Monday after dropping DD at childcare, remembered it would be closed, weighed up whether we would have enough in to manage till Tuesday, decided not as our usual milk, egg and veg delivery won’t arrive Monday morning either, so today it had to be.

We went about 10am after raking DD to an activity, was busier than a usual Sunday probably but not apocalyptic or anything. Parked easily and only two people ahead in the queue, though was getting busier as we left.

We don't all live in England

MinervaTerrathorn · 18/09/2022 14:44

I don’t believe that all of these extra people normally do their shop on a Monday.

It would be all the Monday weekly shoppers, and all the people who regularly pop to the shops for bread or milk etc in addition to their weekly shop who are topping up now. My local Tesco Express isn't opening until 5pm. You are also squashing all those shoppers into a 6hr timeslot on a Sunday!

Aldi closes at 4pm on Sunday. It won't be open this evening.

Made me nervous there. It’s open till 8pm as normal. I normally do my weekly shop back of six on a Sunday after work.

I think there's a certain amount of panic about most supermarkets being closed tomorrow. I know I started worrying that we'd run out of milk or bread even though it's only one day and some places are still open.

In reality there might be shortages on Tuesday since most of the country is stopping production and deliveries tomorrow. People are panicking though, it was busy yesterday too.

Violashift · 18/09/2022 14:53

VladmirsPoutine · 18/09/2022 14:40

Is anyone else getting March 2020 flashbacks?

Yes that was my point really. I do know it's because they are closed tomorrow.

thecatsthecats · 18/09/2022 14:54

I guess some people who normally do Saturday big shop went to do activities yesterday, leaving their big shop for Sunday instead? Since literally nothing round here will be open Monday, it makes sense to use what's open on Saturday before shifting to house stuff on Sunday. I bet Homebase etc are rammed too.

We went into the city centre yesterday and it was really busy, so I guess it was partly that.

Redglitter · 18/09/2022 14:55

It's like Christmas Eve everyone's rushing to buy 15 loves of bread and a dozen cartons of milk to get them through the one day the shops are shut

arethereanyleftatall · 18/09/2022 14:56

whatsup00 · 18/09/2022 13:47

It's shut for one day. I don't know why people are going crazy.

Well they're probably not are they. But obviously today you will have double - all the people who would shop on a Sunday plus all those who'd shop on a Monday.

PuttingDownRoots · 18/09/2022 15:00

I normally shop at Asda around 10-11am. Its quite busy. If half those people went today to addition to the Sunday shoppers, it would be extremely busy!

Violashift · 18/09/2022 15:01

Be interesting to see the economic differences.

OP posts:
Judellie · 18/09/2022 15:03

I got paid early so went on Friday night and there were long queues then! I detest shopping on Saturday at the best of times and Sunday is even worse but lots of people must have been thinking the same as me!

AuntieMarys · 18/09/2022 15:05

It was madness today in Aldi and Sainsbury's. I usually go on Mondays... and we've been away so there was nothing in the house.

BatteryPoweredMammy · 18/09/2022 15:06

Plumbear2 · 18/09/2022 14:14

Aldi closes at 4pm on Sunday. It won't be open this evening.

Presumably it depends where you live? Ours is open until 9pm as usual today.
