Why is there no own brand Shredded Wheat?

There seems to be does of every other cereal but the large, original sized Shredded Wheat.

Sainsbury's used to do the bitesize clone but stopped earlier this year. I wondered if it was because, with rising wheat prices, they couldn't hit the price point. It also seemed to coincide with having a price lock on the Nestlé version.

Shreddies the same! Can't by own brand anywhere!

I have wondered why too

Lidl does a bite size version: not sure about the large ones as I've never looked for it.

Lidl also does these, but at the moment rarely in stock!

Mxyzptlk · 18/09/2022 10:19

Tesco has own brand Shreddies.

Tesco do Malt Wheats which are basically shreddies at a fraction of the price

Twilightimmortal · 18/09/2022 10:22

I dont liked the bite size shreddies I mean the large original Shredded Wheat. It seems to be the only cereal that isn't copied anywhere.

I haven’t had shredded wheat for years. I quite like it sometimes. Especially if I’m on a bit of a health kick. It really tastes healthy!

Sainsbury's do their own version of Shreddies, though I don't know if they're currently in stock.

Itsallyellow22 · 18/09/2022 10:56

I always wonder this too!

FirstAidKitNowPlease · 18/09/2022 11:30

You can get own brand shreddies in few places.
The price of branded shreddies has been appalling for a long while and even more so now - I refuse to buy the proper ones at the rate they are inhaled in this house !

But they do actually exist (we get the Sainsburys version when they are in stock - Malties)

Aldi do them

GuyFawkesDay · 18/09/2022 12:28

I know loads of places do them, but they're almost never in stock at the moment. Frustrating as my kids eat LOADS of them so it costs a fortune in Kellogg's!!!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/09/2022 12:30

intresting question.
i have not had shredded wheat for years.
i do like shreddies though, malt wheats are ok

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/09/2022 12:30

may be it isnt a popular cereal?

Spidey66 · 18/09/2022 12:47

Lots of places do own brand shreddies! But I agree only nestle do the large shredded wheat, though many supermarkets do the bite sized fruit filled ones.

love this. Reminds me of my mom who passed away ‘no im not buying that not in this house; you’ll only eat it!’ Lol erm yes mom it is food

Twilightimmortal · 18/09/2022 13:55

I googled it and found people asking this question in 2008 aswell. What is the reason?!

I've always wondered this. The big shredded wheat are one of the only cereals I like. The small ones just aren't the same.

Everywhere does own brand shreddies. I got some in asda last week.

junglejane66 · 18/09/2022 14:44

Probably not commercially viable to make a knock off version if they're not very popular. They remind me of Donald Trumps hair

Ageneralsenseofproundconcern · 18/09/2022 21:52

I usually get knock off shreddies (malties) and bitesize shredded wheat knockoffs at Sainsbury's. We eat more than 2kg a week of the malties so there's fuck all chance I'm buying the branded ones.

Since the turn of the year supply has been erratic to say the least. The bitesize shredded wheat knockoffs have disappeared altogether and the malties disappeared over the summer but I got them last week for the first time in three months.

I seriously do think that the supplier has to supply them to a price point that just hasn't been possible while Ukraine hasn't been exporting wheat. Let's see how things go for the next wee while...

Jmaho · 18/09/2022 21:57

I have never found the own brand normal size Shredded Wheat either just the small ones which is rubbish as my husband loves them but they are so expensive
Own brand Shreddies are everywhere and the only cereal my daughter will eat. But she hates original Shreddies for some odd reason
