Anyone been impressed with their car insurance after an accident?

PanannyPanoo · 15/09/2022 12:26

My car was written off recently in an accident that was not my fault. I am with Admiral and they have been absolutely terrible. The only way to contact them is via the phone. No online chat, no-reply email addresses. I have been on hold for between 40min and over 2 hours. on 6 different occasions and 3 times been returned to the switchboard while trying to get through to claims. The paperwork side of things is ridiculous and the online portal really glitchy.

They have denied that I have courtesy car cover despite me having the document in my online file that says I do. It's the first time I have needed to use car insurance in nearly 30 years.

Has anyone had a crash and been happy with the service that they had afterwards? Would like to take my next policy out with a company that are easier to contact and more able to help. (Admiral Law have been great so far.)

Not a crash but I was burgled a few years ago and they took my car keys (both sets) but locked it as they ran away. I was with Direct Line and couldn't fault them in any way. The had a courtesy car to me within 12 hours, took my car for new keys and reprogramming, collected my car a second time when they hadn't reprogrammed it properly a few days later and provided a second courtesy car. Couldn't fault them. However two years later at renewal their price was way higher than LV who I'm with now so I changed.

Direct Line were really good when someone ran into the back of me early last year. The initial phone call was almost an hour, but after that everything was smooth. My car was repaired swiftly, my car seat replaced within a couple of days, and they kept me in touch with what was happening.

Eileen101 · 15/09/2022 12:37

Direct line 👌

SalviaOfficinalis · 15/09/2022 12:38

Esure where really good with mine. However they just tried to put my premium up by £200 so I’ve left (Accident was 3 years ago so not the cause of this year’s ridiculous increase).

When I was looking for insurance this time a lot of the policies only provide a courtesy car while your car is being repaired - which doesn’t apply if it’s written off. So double check that for your next policy.

Hope you’re feeling okay after the accident.

I was really impressed by someone else's Direct Line car insurance when someone went into the back of me. I was with them for a few years until recently when the premium was just too high against competitors.

SummerVibes22 · 15/09/2022 12:44

I'm with direct line and had an accident that was my fault. Insurance-wise it was all fine. The premium has gone up as expected but it's back to normal now after 2 years. Nothing particularly unpleasant with phone waiting times or anything like that. There was no dispute because I admitted it was my fault so it was all straightforward.

tiddlywinks2 · 15/09/2022 12:46

My car was destroyed by a drunk arsehole. Direct line were amazing from start to finish. Couldn't have been more helpful. Everything was sorted very quickly.

PrancerandDancer · 15/09/2022 12:52

LV were fab when my car was hit. They sorted everything, can't fault them!

lalaloopyhead · 15/09/2022 12:54

Directline - was a while ago but good enough service that I have stayed with them since. I am always happy with our renewal prices too.

Direct line for me too.

I was with Admiral when my car was stolen. The whole claim process was slow, painful and so stressful.
They withdrew my access to my online insurance documents immediately so I had nothing to refer to until I insisted they send me a copy. They tried to wriggle out of the claim saying I had omitted some details when applying for the insurance. I had to ask them to review the recording of the telephone conversation I'd had with them when renewing to prove I'd told them. A couple of weeks after the theft my car was recovered but it had been destroyed by fire. Apparently that meant the whole claim process had to begin again.
It took them 6 weeks to settle the claim, during when time I spent hundreds on hire cars (a courtesy car is only available while your car is being repaired-this might be your issue PanannyPanoo) and ran up a huge phone bill calling them as they never called me (their number was one that mobile companies charged for at the time).
I had no car, and no means to buy a new one until the claim was settled, yet they weren't in any rush to sort it.
When they eventually made me an offer they hugely undervalued my car claiming it was in poor condition (no shit, it was burnt out!) I had to prove how much it would cost to replace like for like before they would pay what it had really been worth.

I wouldn't insure my car with them again, but I doubt they'd insure my car either judging by the astronomical quote they gave me for the replacement car I bought!

impressivelycunty · 15/09/2022 13:22

LV have been great on 2 occasions.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 15/09/2022 13:28

My late husband wrote his car off a few years ago, before he died obviously. It was insured with LV. He was taken to hospital and the car recovered by the police. I had no idea where too initially. The car was only a few months old, so we were entitled to a replacement new one per the policy. But, there was a 6 month wait for a new one. LV inspected the car using photos within 24 hours of it being recovered, and contacted me to say it was a write off (and to tell ‘em where it was so I could collect the things in it). They’d already tried to source a replacement, but as there was a long wait offered to just pay us the invoice price of the car. We accepted that and the money was in the bank 72 hours after the accident.

Noshowlomo · 15/09/2022 13:30

AA were incredible when someone crashed into me, then the car was repaired and someone crashed into my husband

eveoha · 15/09/2022 13:33

I have a straightforward claim with Admiral which has been running for over 2 years - I am reporting them to the Ombudsman and the SRA - I’ve never known such atrocious service - they liaise with Premier medical who have been equally awful - lost all of my medical notes and blamed it on me 🙄 wrong envelope apparently 😡 Steer clear of them

Snozzlemaid · 15/09/2022 13:38

Another vote here for Direct Line.
I've reported a couple of accidents to them and it's been extremely straightforward to sort.
Courtesy car delivered to either home or work and my car collected for repair.
I have stayed with them because of this. I do usually get quotes elsewhere then ring to see if they can match the cheapest quote to get a better deal.

PugInTheHouse · 15/09/2022 13:40

Tesco were amazing. Can't go into detail but it was a very serious non fault incident. Tesco just wrote off the car so we didn't have to have the trauma of having the original car back. All sorted extremely quickly once it was handed to insurers.

CallmeIT · 15/09/2022 13:42

LV are great in my experience, as both my insurer, and as the insurer of the “at fault” driver.

direct line I wouldn’t touch, one of their policy holders caused significant damage to my car and house recently and they couldn’t have been less useful. It sounds like the driver might have had a nice time with them though judging from the PPs.

EndTheMonacyNow · 15/09/2022 13:42

We had joy riders crash into our car which was parked in the road. They ran off so our insurers had to pay us it's value. When the guy phoned to make the offer he sounded really pleased with himself and offered me a very reasonable amount. I was shocked. I assumed he would try and short change me. He said he looked at what I could rebuy a similar car for online and offered me a similar price.

It was Admiral although a couple of years ago.

TrashPandas · 15/09/2022 13:42

LV was great.

1st Central was appalling - I would never go with them again, even if they offered me insurance for free.

elizaregina · 15/09/2022 13:45

Who is lv?

PugInTheHouse · 15/09/2022 13:45

Also tesco answered calls quickly but also communicated via email to avoid the trauma of discussing the accident too much.

1stWorldProblems · 15/09/2022 13:45

The AA were great at getting us a courtesy car on 24th Dec after someone crashed into our parked car on 23rd. The claim was eventually settled in our favour (& wasn't being contested) but the whole process was ridiculously long winded & time consuming - we didn't get our car back into 13th May (140 days after the crash) & the claim and hire car costs weren't settled until 19th July! The only way to contact them was by phone & my longest wait was almost 2 hours.

At our next renewal I will be going with an insurer with online chat facilities even if they're more expensive.

Itsmeagainyes · 15/09/2022 13:46

Another vote for Direct Line, Churchill were pretty decent too.
