Can an abdication be reversed?

Ok so pure curiosity, not making any suggestion that any of this could happen but what would happen if EG Charles decided to abdicate in favour of William to give him a nice long reign, but then William died. Could Charles take back his duties (unabdicate as it were) or would it pass on to the next in line of succession?

It would pass to the next in line i.e. George.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/09/2022 22:13

No it can’t, it would pass on.

No danger of C abdicating for some time though..

😆 I agree although Nostradamus appears to think differently!

I suppose in that unlikely scenario if George was a minor Charles could be appointed as the regent but presumably wouldn't want the job back.

Rainbowcat99 · 14/09/2022 23:07

Guilt I suppose, if he stepped down so William could get his teeth into it, then there ended up being a child king.

What did Naustradamas say?

MaryTruss · 14/09/2022 23:15

A short reign for Charles and a Great War in 2023 @mumarewenearlythereyet

mumarewenearlythereyet · 14/09/2022 23:20

Ooh, didn't know that. Years ago I read something he wrote about a King Henry and I remembered Harry's official christened name is Henry. Surely he is too far away from heir now though...

Shortjanet · 14/09/2022 23:21

But if Charles did abdicate (hypothetically) would the throne actually pass to William? When Edward abdicated he gave up the throne for himself and for any children he might have so I assume a Charles abdication may also remove his sons and grandchildren from the line of succession. If so that'd make Andrew next in line...

What did Naustradamas say?

The divorced King will abdicate and someone who knew expected to be king takes the reign......

I'm going to place a bet at the bookies for the claimed lovechild of Charles and Camilla who lives in Aus..... In his 50s so would make him before Will.

Another translation is divorced King abdicates due to church conflict and Will makes the Islands Republic

Someone who never expected to be king* we really need an edit button.

Didn't Nostradamus predict the world was going to end in 1999?

I was 11 in 1999 and remember being terrified that it was actually going to happen 😂

MLMsuperfan · 14/09/2022 23:28

Nostradamus said that Charles would resign.

CombatBarbie · 14/09/2022 23:30

Not that I'm aware of, his predictions go way into 2103..... But the antichrist is due to be born 2032 FYI 😂

Well I will be 62 by then so he won't be mine.

The 'children he might have' referred to children he might have after he abdicated, thus avoiding the spectacle of Elizabeth having to duke it out with some prince or princess born after December 1936 to decide who was Monarch.

If he had had any legitimate children at the time of his abdication the Crown would have passed to them.

Since he had no legitimate issue, the Crown passed to the next in line, his brother.

LimpBiskit · 14/09/2022 23:41

The world is due to end next year so it's an entirely moot question.

I think Edward had to give up the claim for future children because there weren't any, so to speak. If Charles abdicated, surely it would go to the next in line i.e. William.

if Edward had already had children my guess is they would have been appointed with George as Regent.

Shortjanet · 14/09/2022 23:51

Ah, ok. It was such a one-off I wasn't sure what the rules were.

Hagrod · 14/09/2022 23:58

Is that you asking, Charles?

It would be brilliant if the unexpected person was Harry just to see mumsnet combust with Queen Meghan 🤣

Which Nostradamus quatrain is it - the one about the King being 'fleeced'?
