Log burner owners - do you have a stove fan?

I know log burners are unpopular but we have 1 and a stash of logs to use up

Hoping to use it instead of the heating for a lot of the winter - do stove fans make much of a difference in pushing the heat through to other rooms?

Stove fans really help (we have a knocked through room with a stove in so it is very long).

The thing that is MORE important is to invest in a moisture meter/probe and only burn dry wood AND burn it at the right temperature to minimise soot. A thermometer you tie round the stove pipe should only cost about a tenner.

A carbon monoxide alarm is pretty important too.

My parents got a stove fan last winter & it made a huge difference in getting the heat around other areas of house

Ha ha. These are discussed a lot on canalworldforum ! They are a very divisive subject.

we have one - it’s used as a physical reminder to bank the stove up.

Ours makes a difference, and need the stove thermometer to remind everyone to keep it hot.

No stove fan. Don’t have an open plan house though so wouldn’t help much. Our’s is our central heating & hot water.

Ours makes a difference to the room it's in but I haven't noticed much change going out into the kitchen and hall for example.

Those that say they make a difference - we don't have an open plan house (downstairs is living room plus large kitchen diner - log burner is in the living room but we do tend to have the door open to the kitchen)

Do you have expensive ones or just the £25 Amazon ones?

The £25 quid ones are just the same as the ‘expensive’ ones from a chandler’s. Maybe the finish is a smidge better. But they do the same job. A three blade is better than a two blade.
If money was no object, I would love one of the more artistic, sculptural ones.

I don't notice much difference to be honest, but our house is fairly small. It's in a small ish living room and then the heat rises upstairs regardless of the fan. We have underfloor heating in the open plan kitchen diner and the log burner heats the rest of the house. ILs have a fan and they have a larger dining room and lounge that get very cold and I think it does make a difference in their house for pushing the heat towards the colder bits.

We bought a Stirling engine fan for ours about a decade ago. It wasn't cheap, but it certainly wasn't £300+

Dh and geeky chimney sweep like it.

I got the cheap ones on amazon for my 2 stoves, makes a huge difference in heating the whole room not just around the fireplace.

We have two either side of the stove chimney. Not open plan - just a simple lounge but with high Victoria's ceilings. They cost about £50 each I think. They make a huge difference and instead of the heat rising straight up on exiting the fireplace and being lost to the ceiling, the heat is directed horizontally across the room, easily covering the 15ft width and warming up the far side of the room. It's only a 4.9Kw log burner so every little helps although to be honest it gets too hot very quickly.

I've got one, just a cheap one. It definitely helps move the warm air out of our open plan dining room and lounge to heat the rest of the house a bit.

And woodburners are only unpopular on mumsnet in my experience. The huge majority of people I know have one, and don't have any plans to get rid of them.

I have a fan, but I'm not convinced it makes any difference. I like it because it reminds me to build up the fire again if the speed drops.

A carbon monoxide alarm and a moisture probe are more important.

I have a stove fan and I notice a difference. My Dd has one too and it really helps as the previous house owners put a small stove in so it struggles to heat the room but with the fan it's miles better.

We got one from Aldi and it did help circulate the heat more, we kept the sitting room door open and it would heat the downstairs

After having a woodburner for 12 years I finally got one small fan a couple of years ago - just a cheap one from Amazon. It has made a world of difference in our long thin living room. So much so that a got a second one last winter. Wish I'd got them sooner.

Good to hear they work well, just had a burner installed and got a fan from eBay. Not that I want to wish what remains of any nice weather away but can’t wait to start using it!
