Log burner owners - do you have a stove fan?

I know log burners are unpopular but we have 1 and a stash of logs to use up

Hoping to use it instead of the heating for a lot of the winter - do stove fans make much of a difference in pushing the heat through to other rooms?

I have a multi fuel stove with a back boiler so it heats the water. Because of that it gives out a little less heat to the room. It's also in a huge stone fireplace.

I bought a stove fan years ago and it spins away nicely but I don't honestly think it makes much difference to the heat in the room.

@CatLadyDrinksGin we bought ours at least a decade ago, but this might have been the brand:

We got one from Aldi and it did help circulate the heat more, we kept the sitting room door open and it would heat the downstairs

Seen these recently - £10?

I hear the living room until it’s warm and then let the heat out into the dining room and kitchen. It doesn’t work well enough to have the doors open to start with.

We were given a Stirling engine by DS one Christmas and it makes a huge difference. We leave the door open and it heats up the whole hall stairs and landing to a noticeable degree, this with a hot water boiler, which is Incorporated somehow into the oil central heating system. Mind you, our wood burning stove is nearly the size of a sideboard…
We bought one from Lidl for something like a fiver for the much smaller stove in our holiday cottage and it does the trick, too.
Are they really £300? Blimey.

@WelshMoth Yep that's about right. Smile

I am sure the Aldi ones are fine.

It just dawned on me that you might need to check the footprint of your stovetop. Some of the fans have fairly large bases.

I’ve just tried one of these today and can’t say I’m noticing any difference! However, I’m not sure we have the right kind of stove to use with it, freestanding stove with a cooler top. It is spinning away but can’t feel it pushing any warm air forward - should it be discernible?

Tulipomania · 12/12/2022 19:48

Wow, I haven't heard of these. Worth checking out!

KM1991 · 12/12/2022 20:13

100% worth it! We rarely use the heating with 3 burners downstairs (no doors downstairs) and 1 in our bedroom (very fortunate endless supply of wood)

We have 2 fans on each burner and they push the heat around brilliantly. Not expensive ones but they have been going years.

KM1991 · 12/12/2022 20:16

Also….apologies if I’m stating the obvious but lots of people don’t do it (my SIL for one)…..make sure the fan is placed towards the back of the burner so you push the hottest air forward.

Wherediditallgo · 12/12/2022 20:16

Yes and if you set up your clothes rack nearby the warm air dries your clothes very quickly.

CombatBarbie · 12/12/2022 20:17

Def worth it, I move them to direct heat towards the airers during the day as in diagonally if that makes sense.

Thank you, I hadn’t realised this!

However the bloody thing seems to have stopped moving altogether now.

can people actually feel them pushing out air like a fan though? I didn’t get that when it was actually spinning.

KM1991 · 12/12/2022 20:47

To be honest in the very beginning it wouldn’t have occurred to me (husband used to fit log burners and has an obsession so I’ve had many lessons on how to work them efficiently…ZZzzzzzzzzz lol)

I don’t think it feels like a blowing fan as such but I think it’s does speed up the spread of the heat by moving it around subtly especially in a closed room.
