Get the bunting out, let's have a street party

I can't help that all this mourning and cancelling everything is against what the queen herself would have wanted.

I think we should get the bunting out, line up the street parties and celebrate her life.

No, she was an upholder of tradition and duty, and would support the traditions of a monarch who has passed. It’s not appropriate to have street parties when someone as cherished as the Queen dies

twordle · 09/09/2022 20:29

I guess we had our chance to do that in June whilst she was still here to enjoy it. I agree with PP that now is time for quiet reflection. But I'm not in agreement with cancelling everything either..

CaramelTwirl · 09/09/2022 20:30

It's raining though.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 09/09/2022 20:32

No.

GhostCastle · 09/09/2022 20:36

Grass roots football has been cancelled. My teenage son will now be on the PS when he could have been outside playing with his team. I’m not a fan of the royal family. Less so now.

ILoveMonday · 09/09/2022 20:39

No, not a street party. Although if we don't get a public holiday for Elizabeth the Great, I will cry.

MrsDThomas · 09/09/2022 20:41

Don’t know why you are complaining about sports cancelled. It was expected.

being on the PS won’t harm your kid

Sluj · 09/09/2022 20:42

I'm glad she got a chance to have her jubilee and see us all celebrating her life with the street parties and events, a great tribute to her at that time. Now is not the time for partying.

Teddyandsuzie · 09/09/2022 20:44

No!

Do something about it then. Not the royal family’s problem

Dalaidramailama · 09/09/2022 20:46

I know my sons now have a fortnight with no football. I mean what the fuck? Why? No other sport has been cancelled.

It’s really annoying. Why can’t kids play football? 2 minutes silence would have been more than enough.

Dailywalk · 09/09/2022 20:51

I agree football should still be going ahead. My DH runs a team and initially there was going to be a two minute silence. This then changed to the whole game being cancelled. The kids won’t exactly be sat at home mourning will they? I think it’s the wrong decision to cancel.

My son's team are having a kick about/friendly between each other on the field tomorrow. Just because there's no games on this weekend doesn't mean that the coaches can't put a practice or kick about on.

Especially when it seems every other sport is going ahead.

BarbarasStripedHands · 09/09/2022 20:53

Football has probably been cancelled out of respect to Prince William, as he's the President of the FA.

I doubt they would be covered by FA insurance if they have been told not to play.

Prescottdanni123 · 09/09/2022 20:58

We'll get that at the coronation. If you don't like Charles then view it as an opportunity for a final farewell to the queen.

dudsville · 09/09/2022 20:59

I thought your idea was a nice one OP!

Cherrysherbet · 09/09/2022 21:02

It’s tradition and protocol.

Its absolutely what the Queen would have wanted and expected.

It’s the least we can do.

NoodleSnow · 09/09/2022 21:02

The weirdest thing about cancelling all football is that I’ve observed more silences, tributes, minutes of applause and renditions of the national anthem inside football grounds than I have anywhere else. Clubs have always marked the passing of significant figures both within and beyond their own community.
Cancelling all matches takes away the opportunity for many people to mark the event collectively.

NoodleSnow · 09/09/2022 21:04

There was no precedent or protocol driving the cancellation. There were matches played in the days following the death of George VI.

MsAnnFrope · 09/09/2022 21:11

There’s no protocol or official guidance on not playing football. Other sports are on.

Horse racing has been cancelled for today and tomorrow.
I'm pretty sure rugby was cancelled for today too.

Upwiththelark76 · 09/09/2022 21:20

So there’s no football …. Have some family time instead .
