Should I persist with Gilmore Girls when I find Lotelai so intensely irritating?

Going through a bit of a tough time at the moment, and on a different thread asking for recommendations for comforting cheering TV programmes a lot of people suggested Gilmore Girls, which is something I’d never watched. I’m half-way through the first series and I do like it, and yes it is comforting and is the TV equivalent of a comfy pair of slippers, which is exactly what I need at the moment. But Lorelai grates on me so much! The constant long-winded meant-to-be-funny answers to every question she’s asked, the fake ditziness, the way she treats her friends like shit. Does she calm down a bit? Like with Friends when they’re all a bit over-the-top versions of themselves in the first series, and then settle down a bit into their characters?

I liked the first few series but struggled with 6 and couldn't finish 7! Like many series, it should have finished at the end of 4 or possibly 5.

Givemeallthegin8 · 09/09/2022 14:02

I’m so jealous that you get to watch it for the first time! I watched it weekly when it came out first !
Its very comforting and I’m currently re- watching it again for the 16th time 🤭
I really like loreli so I can’t help you with that , you will get used to her though , same with the grandparents . Hated them at first but ended up loving them, Emily is very witty !
don’t give up, enjoy !

I watched it all but I think she gets worse to be honest. As does Rory. Have you tried New Girl or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? They were quite nice and inoffensive. Also Lovesick was a brilliant series.

I'm the same as you OP. I've just started watching the first series for the first time and it reminds me so much Dawson's Creek. It looks pretty and is very comforting but the script writers are just filling lines with trying to be witty sentences.

Annasgirl · 09/09/2022 14:07

No she gets worse - everyone gets more annoying. Watched it with DD but had to stop - but I lasted quite a few seasons.

justasking111 · 09/09/2022 14:10

Now I liked the way her parents roles expanded which made you realise that Lorelei was damaged by her upbringing hence hers and Rory related

Theundertaker · 09/09/2022 14:11

I don't think she tones down, no. But she might possibly grow on you a bit - there are definitely characters who bring out the best in her and others who bring out the worst.

pinkpirlie · 09/09/2022 14:13

I found with friends they got worse as the seasons went on, like they became characatures of their characters, rather than settled into them.

I enjoyed all of Gilmore Girls, but Lorelei is a bit awks.

What about something like Superstore as an alternative.

We also recently rewatched The Mentalist, which never seems to drop off (bar the odd episode).

CornedBeef451 · 09/09/2022 14:16

I couldn't get on with Gilmore girls but after an initial struggle I loved Schitts Creek for it's strange wholesomeness and Supernatural for being like Buffy but with an array of hot men in it. You don't need to follow the plot, just enjoy their pretty faces and inconsistent monster lore.

Anunusualfamily · 09/09/2022 14:16

Gilmore girls is my comfort watch and can’t count how many times I watched it. I cycle through characters that I like and dislike though. Dean is the worst Season 7 and ?6 is written by different writers so that does change the feel of it and it should have been Dave

SudocremOnEverything · 09/09/2022 14:17

I loved Gilmore girls. But I found that as Lorelei gets less irritating, Rory gets so much more irritating to fill that gap. 🤣

pistachi0nuts · 09/09/2022 14:25

Rory gets sooooooo much worse you end up siding with Lorelai! Rory has a very satisfying fall from grace....it gets interesting. Stick with it!!

MinglingFlamingo · 09/09/2022 14:29

Lorelai gets a bit better. Still has her moments but certainly improves. Rory on the other hand become a right brat.

3peassuit · 09/09/2022 14:34

It was Rory who was more annoying in the end. So much entitlement for no good reason. Lorelai improved a bit. The grandparents really grew on me.

Gilm0reGirl · 09/09/2022 14:36

Love it! Currently re watching it for around the 8th time 😂 I do think Rory needs a bit of a fall down to earth a few times though and there are lots of moments when I hate each character but it's comforting background tv for me, my biggest downside is it makes me so hungry!

Barkcloth · 09/09/2022 14:37

I watched all of it (Although the recent-ish reprise was dire & I gave up on it. I'm with you on Lorelei (I think I once started a thread about it 😄). She is such a bloody narcissist, everything has to be about her. Very 'not like other girls'. And Rory was going the same way by the end.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 09/09/2022 14:40

Ah see I would say if you're not liking it from the get go then it's not for you. The constant chatter from lorelai it's usp. Try Marvellous Mrs Maisel

Glitterspy · 09/09/2022 14:48

I couldn’t watch GG because she’s sooo annoying and it’s all just so real-unreal and irritating.

Anunusualfamily · 09/09/2022 14:57

Paris is one of the best

Sammysquiz · 09/09/2022 19:28

I think I might get to the end of series 1 to give it a fair go, and see if she’s grown on me. Thank you for the suggestions of other programmes I might enjoy, will check them out.

I'm with you. I find Lorelei immensely irritating. I just want her to shut up.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/09/2022 19:49

Just staaahhhp now.
If you don't find her ditziness and chatter charming now, you will honestly want to stab her dead with a cake fork later.

Yy to Schitts Creek, and hope things improve for you soon.

OrangeBananaFish · 09/09/2022 20:41

I love GG and keep thinking about rewatching it. It's Rory that gets me annoyed. I can't say why without any big huge spoilers though.

Watched season 1 of Schitts Creak and did not enjoy it at all.

Shodan · 09/09/2022 20:47

I love Gilmore Girls but tbh Lorelai behaves like a proper pouty madame a lot of the time 😂But as pps have indicated- she gets better as Rory gets worse, so there's a balance.

Castaspell · 09/09/2022 20:50

I couldn't even get through the first season. Really wanted to like it but was just constantly irritated.
Can I recommend Golden Girls instead? Nothing alike aside from the name but an amazing binge comfort watch for me.
