Does anyone remember this?

I’ve got a really vivid memory of walkers salt and vinegar crisps being blue then changing to green. I can remember the shop I was at when I noticed the change. I’ve listened to a great podcast about this, and apparently it didn’t happen, but I am curious does anyone else remember this?!?!

It definitely happened! I remember TV adverts about it and everything!
Funnily enough, Walkers Squares salt & vinegar are still in blue packaging though!

I think the answer is that in certain parts of the country the brand that was dominant in shops changed from Not Walkers to Walkers and that's what we remember.

I thought I remembered it happening some time around 1980, but also accept a brand switch as an explanation as I was primary age at that time and wouldn't have been aware of the difference between Golden Wonder, Smiths, Walkers etc.

That would make sense, I grew up in Leicester and Walkers were always everywhere, and it's always been Cheese & Onion are blue, Salt & Vinegar are green.

Smiths and all the other brands were just wrong doing it the other way round! 😁

Except it definitely didn't happen 😂

It's the golden wonder confusion. I remember seeing walkers crisps and thinking they were an obscure and inferior brand, then suddenly they were completely dominant!

I don't think Walkers invented Squares which might explain the difference.

I think they used to be Smiths.

stayathomer · 31/08/2022 14:44

I think Wallers themselves know the right answer.
The conspiracy deepens—how do these wallers people know😜

Becknutmeg · 31/08/2022 14:44

@stayathomer 😂😂😂

I always thought they were the opposite way round too!

Does anyone remember the promotion they done with the walkers man and if you seen him when you were out and about he would give you a fiver? I think there was a promotion in the crisps too and you opened a wee bag to win something?

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 31/08/2022 14:47

In my part if the north east we didn't have Walker's Crisps; we had Tudor Crisps and KP. Salt & Vinegar were always in blue bags and cheese & onion were in green bags.

Walker's obviously dominate now; Tudor are long gone, but I still can't get my head round blue being cheese & onion and salt & vinegar in green. Its all wrong.

SoupDragon · 31/08/2022 14:47

Why are there no photos of these differently coloured packets?

Does anyone remember this?

Yes, they were definitely Smiths Squares.

YES!! They put actual money in little bags!!! £5, £10 & £20 notes, but usually it was a free bag of crisps.

I miss those exciting promotions, 'text this number to see if you're a winner' just isn't the same. I don't think I've ever even done it. Has anyone?

FarmDoesntRhymeWithCalm · 31/08/2022 14:53

Ok, the theory that we (those convinced S&V used to be blue and C&O used to be green) got confused as Golden Wonder (and other brands who used blue for S&V and green for C&O) were around before Walkers came on makes sense.

Walkers just seems like that person who refuses to give in to trends or fads because they're 'too cool' to follow the crowd. You're not cool Walkers...you're just confusing the nation!!

Love that I can spot the most recent packet as the one with nutritional info at the bottom!

All that says it that you should be wary of relying on your memory

That a pretty elaborate false memory to creat.

Yeh it’s weird though I remember an advert for the switch too

These threads always amuse me.

People are SO convinced they're right even though there's absolutely ZERO evidence to prove it and even Walkers themselves say it never happened.

Why on earth would they lie?! Why would they get rid of every single piece of evidence?

Barkingdog2022 · 31/08/2022 15:05

I remember this!! I’ll never be convinced otherwise 🤣

I bloody love crisps.

I remember eating Golden Wonder as a kid. By the time I was a teen (late 80s) it was Walkers everywhere, with their opposite colouring. Poor Golden Wonder, what happened?

Anyway, Walkers Salt & Vinegar are the best crisps ever.

You can still get Golden Wonder, though not everywhere. Our local Morrisons sells Ringos.

Ahh, opening a packet and finding the coveted BLUE SQUARE!.As a child, to me that was the most exciting thing ever!

Becknutmeg · 31/08/2022 15:22

@APJ1 i wish they would do this again. I can’t believe I missed out!!!!

Changenameobviousreasons · 31/08/2022 16:20

@FarmDoesntRhymeWithCalm i also remember the advert! I only learned the other day that the entire thing was apparently made up and was shouting THERE WAS A TV ADVERT in my head 😂
