Hi Moving up from London to Manchester have 2 sons aged 3 and 1 have a budget of 700k we have found 2 properties 1 in Prestwich and the other in Whitefield which area is better?

You would get an amazing house if you went further into North Bury. Much nicer areas and still good links to Manchester

Jansobieski · 29/08/2022 21:29

For what ? Bit of a vague question. Both areas are generally okayish to live in with that budget although like everywhere prices have shot up...🙄

Larraa · 30/08/2022 11:48

I suppose I just wanted to know the differences between the two areas with them being so close to one another. So far what I've gathered they both have large Jewish communities, Prestwich is closer to the city centre and has a lot more restaurants, cafes etc?

Prestwich, much more of a community/village feel.

x2boys · 30/08/2022 13:13

They are next to each other ,prestwich had some nice little bars and cafes.,I don't think there is much between them

Have to agree ,but I grew up in Greenmount so I'm biased ,lovely village though

carriedaway · 30/08/2022 13:21

I think most people would say Prestwich

yoshiblue · 30/08/2022 14:08

Does it need to be those two areas eg family members? If I had that money to spend I'd be looking in parts of Trafford, but no point recommending places if you need to be in North of the city.

Larraa · 30/08/2022 14:50

@yoshiblue Yes it needs to be north

OP posts:
Nw22 · 30/08/2022 14:51

I have lived on both and prefer whitefield for green spaces and community.

yoshiblue · 30/08/2022 15:06

@Larraa ok! If I had that money to spend I'm not sure I'd be looking at those areas, I find Bury New Road really depressing.

Agree with comments to look a bit further north, places like Ramsbottom and surrounding areas.

Adelaide66 · 30/08/2022 15:42

I live in Greenmount and yes , it is a lovely area but I do think you are paying for the name. Ramsbottom is more reasonable but you have to travel in to Bury to catch the tram. Prestwich/Whitefield are commuter
friendly for Manchester. Dont even think about Radcliffe

Yes your right but it's a lovely village ,my parents still live there ,no way I could afford to live there!
With you on Radcliffe though it's grim!

bookish83 · 03/09/2022 18:08

I can't believe those mentioning Ramsbottom and Greenmount... love hearing local people!

OP just have a look at the areas mentioned. You will get a much nicer property and area

whiteroseredrose · 03/09/2022 18:58

A few years ago Whitefield was 'posher' than Prestwich but that has probably changed now.

Prestwich also has access to Heston Park which has had a lot of money spent on it recently.

Plus £700k should buy something nice in Prestwich.

Panda368 · 03/09/2022 19:05

Prestwich Prestwich Prestwich,
have lived in both, currently Whitfield as we couldn’t afford the space we we wanted in Prestwich.

if I could transplant my current house/garden into Prestwich near heaton park or down at Anne’s rd I would,
It’s much more walkable and sociable. We find ourselves having to drive everywhere in Whitfield.

Fallonangel · 03/09/2022 19:55

I live 2 mins away from both. I'd say Prestwich but that budget is at the lower end.
I run in Heaton Park daily. Beautiful place.

What have they spent the money on?
We always enjoy a day in Heaton Park ,but haven't been for a couple of years .

Heaton Hall has been restored and is now open to the public. A new playarea and opening up of wooded areas with pedestrian paths.

I thought the play area was quite new anyway?
Do they still have that beach thing in the summer?

Fallonangel · 03/09/2022 20:25

Yes the beach thing is there and they do a lightopeia light walk from Mid Nov which I can highly recommend.

Thanks for the recommendation tbh I probably went pre pandemic last time ,it was always a favourite of ours for a cheap day out when the kids were little .

northernshite · 03/09/2022 20:49

Prestwich has a very active mums community and shops, cafes, bars etc, plus Heaton park and St Mary's Park. Whitefield has a few restaurants and a few smaller parks. I'd pick Prestwich over Whitefield with that budget but I'd want to be close to a tram stop (less than 10 mins walk), especially if you need to work in Manchester centre. Schools are ok in both areas. I'm from Prestwich but live in Whitefield now. Bury is also good for shopping with little kids and is close by.

MrsMo17 · 28/01/2023 15:11

Can anyone recommend a cleaner in the prestwich area?
