Help! GCSE Paper Re-Mark advice

Hi, Has anyone had any luck going up a grade in their GCSE after a re-mark/check? My son is missing 3 marks off a higher grade in Maths and 4 marks in English.

My DS is feeling down as now he has to change 2 of his A Level choices. he did well in his other subjects - 6 and 7s but he needs the 6 for Maths and English.
We are also applying for retakes in November but not sure how successful that will be as he will be studying his other subjects.....any advice very welcome.
One very stressed Mummy!!

We have just had English Lang remarked and the mark stayed the same. His friend went down 2 marks.

Some good news! Found out yesterday via email after sending my sons business papers (EDEXCEL) for a review of marking that they found 4 extra marks. His grade went from a 7 to 8.
Thankfully his teacher checked his papers.

Anyone had any new from AQA?

Great news! The English paper I mentioned was AQA.

Wombatbum · 04/09/2022 11:00

My DD’s teacher said to my daughter that she was 3 marks off an 8 so they are going to send it off?! Early entry so exam was done in y10.

savehannah · 04/09/2022 11:46

We have had her drama paper back and even at a glance can see two points she should have got that she didn't (even me who knows nothing about drama!). So hoping she will go up from 5 to 6 unless they mark her down on other parts. But haven't managed to get it sent off yet as she's left the school they haven't worked out how I can pay them the review fee! Waiting for the exams officer to get back to me.

Nellle · 05/09/2022 21:23

So far we've had 17 AQA English grades come back which have gone up. A handful which have stayed the same or gone down, but not enough to change grade.

countdowntonap · 05/09/2022 22:44

@Nellle were they challenged due to grade boundary proximity or because you noticed errors in the QLA?

honeydue3 · 05/09/2022 22:46

Wow, 17 seems a lot. And they achieve the grade higher? Did they go up by quite a few marks?

We are still waiting for DS English literature and language papers!

Was the problem that they rushed the marking in the first place?

@coucountdowntonap All close to boundaries. We encouraged any student within 3 marks to review.

@honey Yes, it's 17 that went up to the next grade. We'll get plenty that don't as well.

honeydue3 · 06/09/2022 18:23

@Nellle
And what was the highest mark increase please?

My sons history paper is 2 marks off the next grade, I sent one paper In but no change. His teacher thought there maybe movement in that paper but didn’t say for the other 2 papers. Should I send the other 2 for review or marking anyway?

Nellle · 06/09/2022 18:57

@honeydue3 Some had whole questions missed. One went from a grade 1 to a 5, which was shocking. The highest we've had that wasn't a missed question was 9 marks.

I'd take advice from the teacher about the papers you want to review now, because the risk all depends on the size of the boundaries.

savehannah · 07/09/2022 00:53

I thought that with subjects like English and drama the marks are quite subjective and it wouldn't be obvious to us whether it was marked right or not Having looked at my daughter's drama paper, it is absolutely clear that they gave two marks out of four on one question when she clearly got all four marks.

If there's an obvious misapplication of the mark scheme, that should be quickly rectified in review.

I’m looking to getting my daughter’s French and Maths GCSE remarked. She was one mark off a higher grade in both. Does anyone know if I have to pay the £38 x4 for the French paper to be re marked for the 4 parts of the paper and £38 x2 for the 2 Maths papers? School are being very unhelpful and sent a form to fill in with £38 written on it. Is this per paper or per subject? I’m worried this could get expensive. Parents get charged for remarks. Thank you

MrsHamlet · 08/09/2022 18:24

Reviews (not remarks) cost per paper, not per subject.

honeydue3 · 08/09/2022 18:42

I had to pay £50 per paper, but if grade goes up you receive a refund!

OP posts:
surreygirl1987 · 08/09/2022 18:50

Per paper. But it's a review not a remark. I hate the high costs as yet again it advantages the more affluent who can afford to chance £50 (or whatever - different costs for different exam boards)

Slowlydoesit · 10/09/2022 09:07

So, DS is 2 marks off a 7 in RE. He got a high 8 for paper 1 and then a high 6 and low 4 for papers 2 and 3. Having looked at paper 3 it appears that he has been very harshly marked. Anyone have any success in RE remarks? Board is Exdecel. Thank you.

MrsHamlet · 10/09/2022 10:39

It's not a remark; it's a review. If the marking is judged to have been unreasonable, then it will change.

honeydue3 · 10/09/2022 15:37

My DS is 2 marks away from the next grade up in History. I submitted one paper for a review after his teacher said there may be a possibility that paper could move up. It came back the same, should I submit the other two considering its only 2 marks he needs?
Also, i'm quite concerned that so many mistakes have happened during marking this year, I feel that all the papers have to be checked now as I don't feel confident with the exam boards!

OP posts:
honeydue3 · 10/09/2022 15:38

Also English paper is 1 away from the next grade, it is so frustrating when it is so close.
