What do you think of theory that we go to a parallel universe when we die?

Seen this on TikTok. Something to do with quantum theory proving that our consciousness goes to a parellel universe when we die, and we continue life in that universe.

To me, this is worse than the idea of nothingness after death. What if you travel to a bad parallel universe? No thanks.

What do you think, is it plausible or is it woo?

What's the difference between this and reincarnation? Could we go back to the same universe or does it have to be a parallel one?

VanishedAgain · 25/08/2022 20:12

I thought the point of parallel lives was that they run parallel to the one we are currently living - like a sliding doors type thing. So when we die, would we go into a parallel life where we were still alive? What happens to the other me when I take over in that life?

Pacca · 25/08/2022 20:13

I think it's all bollocks

BeanieTeen · 25/08/2022 20:14

It’s not implausible, but it is very complex and I’d be cautious of how to interpret ‘consciousness’ in this sense.

LookingGlassMilk · 25/08/2022 20:14

I think it's a part of the many worlds hypothesis. So if there is a parallel universe for every possibility, then if your consiousness is in the universe where you get hit by a bus at the age of 21, then afterwards your consiousness will just continue in another where that didn't happen. You would never be able to experience your own untimely death.
But I imagine that it would eventually get to the point where the possibilities run out and you would eventually experience death at an old age.

IncompleteSenten · 25/08/2022 20:14

According to this theory, does this only happen the once or are we hopping from universe to universe for eternity? Is this one universe 1 or further along on our death jumps?

I'd be pretty pissed off if this was my after life tbh.

Fat and broke. Great.

But seriously, anything is possible I guess but I highly doubt we're travelling through universes, living and dying over and over again.

I fucking hope not, anyway.

bellinisurge · 25/08/2022 20:14

Nope. Pretty sure we turn to dust which is eventually going to be absorbed back into the universe when the Sun finally gives up and the Earth dies. Millions of years from now. I'm cool with that.

Celia24 · 25/08/2022 20:16

Nope. We just die.

HeddaGarbled · 25/08/2022 20:16

Nicely summed up 🙂

Quveas · 25/08/2022 20:17

What are the chances a parallel universe would be worse than the one we already have?

But it was on Star Trek long before TikTok was invented.

BlueKaftan · 25/08/2022 20:17

I think something like this is entirely possible. No one knows though and probably never will. I don’t think we turn to dust.

BeanieTeen · 25/08/2022 20:17

I also don’t think death is as big a mystery as people think - or the nothingness of it. I see death as ‘not being alive’. And we’ve all been previously not alive. What comes after life is probably the same as what came before. We’ve all already experienced it, although it is somewhat of a ‘non experience.’

VanishedAgain · 25/08/2022 20:21

Me too if the predictions for the future are true. I don’t really want to be reincarnated or whatever to live on a planet where life is as scientists have predicted/warned us.

halfmoonvibes · 25/08/2022 20:22

It's basically the multiverse theory.

So in essence, a parallel universe is invented for every possibility. So if you're deliberating on whether or not to have pizza for dinner, if you choose to have the pizza, there will be a parallel universe invented where you didn't choose the pizza. If you almost got hit by a car, there will be a parallel universe invented where you did get hit by the car and got injured. Etc.

So parallel universes are being made all the time alongside our current reality. And they follow our current realitys timeline.

And when we die, our consciousness gets taken randomly to one of these other universes.

I think thats how it works anyway?

How do we know that we are not all actually already in the parallel universe?🤔

Where would the consciousness currently living in the other parallel universe my consciousness goes to, go?

Doyoumind · 25/08/2022 20:26

I think it's less likely than the idea we go to heaven, and I'm an atheist.

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 25/08/2022 20:29

I reckon whatever we think happens to us when we die, happens. No need for a universal experience.

I like the parallel universe theory too though

halfmoonvibes · 25/08/2022 20:31

VanishedAgain · 25/08/2022 20:25

Yes! These are the questions we need. I'd love to see someone who believes this theory answer this Grin

OP posts:
IncompleteSenten · 25/08/2022 20:32

But we'd already be there, having made the other decision, right? So where would our consciousness go?

IncompleteSenten · 25/08/2022 20:33

Did the tiktok thing not elaborate?

Figgygal · 25/08/2022 20:34

Total bullshit

MajorCarolDanvers · 25/08/2022 20:34

Wishful thinking

IncompleteSenten · 25/08/2022 20:33

It's a very, very indepth theory!

This is fascinating! I’ve always believed in this, that there is a ‘life’ being lived elsewhere based on all the decisions that the me posting this now didn’t make(bit confusing) As for after death i think reincarnation fits the best. So certain parts of who you are now, are brought back into existence and live on in someone else. I feel like this explains why you click with certain people instantly that you’ve never met before, or you go somewhere new for the first time but it feels familiar. I love these types of discussions…
