This is just the best news. I've been waiting for an adaptation of Rivals since I first fell in love with the bounder Rupert C-B in circa 1997.

But the question is who will play him? I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who can fill those boots - any suggestions?

No spoilers please! I’m trying to watch one a day.

skyeisthelimit · 21/10/2024 13:00

Wtached the final 3 last night. Wow that ending Shock. It's definitely all set up for a sequel with several characters, so fingers crossed

Anyone else finding it funny that the o'hara house (Aidan turner) is the same house used in Poldark (his breakthrough series)?

Only watched one episode and it's glorious.

OMG it is the same house isn't it. On episode 4 and it's just clicked

Watched it all in one go causing me a very late night! It was epic! Filthy and funny all in one go. I loved it ! Best bit was spotting Jilly in a cameo having lunch ..just brilliant!

hazandduck · 21/10/2024 22:39

Started this tonight. I love all the music, outfits, the setting is exactly how I imagined, and the O’haras are great.

I was a bit disappointed with Rupert but I’ve only watched one so I’m hoping he grows on me. And I will say his body in the tennis scene…wow 😍

I love David Tennant but I cannot picture him as Tony! I actually think ten years ago he would’ve been a perfect Rupert (remember him as Casanova?!)

AgathaMystery · 21/10/2024 22:41

Loved Tony’s Ferranti TV comment. Beautiful detail!

Just re-reading Polo - I'd forgotten that, time-wise, they overlap so much - halfway through Polo = about a third to halfway through Rivals (photo is 46% of the way through Polo) - hard to see how they could make that work.

But if not - I wonder what does the second series of Rivals look like?

Johnny friedlander is TOTALLY WRONG

Lucyintheskywithrubies · 23/10/2024 01:58

@Skelligsfeathers yes I always imagined him as Johnny Depp

StellaLaBella · 23/10/2024 02:15

Hard agree on Johnny Friedlander. I imagined him more like James Dean, shy, complicated, brooding and a bloody good 20 years younger

Laptopneeded · 23/10/2024 07:08

Yy pole dark house, I really think aiden should have been Rupert..

Ozgirl75 · 23/10/2024 09:38

Also agree about Johnny - I pictured someone much younger and sexier.

bookworm14 · 23/10/2024 10:54

Yes Johnny F was all wrong. I also picture him as a young Johnny Depp. I can understand why they changed his 'sex with a 14 year old' storyline, but why age him up?

PugInTheHouse · 23/10/2024 16:23

I loved it. RCB was very good but just not quite good looking enough or obviously not blonde enough! He acted it well IMO though so it didn't ruin it for me, I didn't fancy him which was a bit disappointing haha!

I loved all the characters, it was over the top and fun, exactly how it should be for a JC adaptation. I really hope they do more!!

Okayornot · 23/10/2024 16:54

I can stand RCB not being blonde and I can stand not fancying him (I doubt me and Jilly have the same taste anyway!) but I just found him not posh-looking enough. What's with all the fake tan??

000EverybodyLovesTheSunshine000 · 23/10/2024 22:30

It's not the (right) ending but also too close to the end of the book for there to be a whole second series. Plus how long will we bloody have to wait for that?! So confused.

Agreed! 💯

Who was Johnny friedlander?!
(Haven't read the book)

Ahh the guy at the beginning!!😂

Declan's first big interview, tbf he was only in the book for about 4 pages 🤣

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 24/10/2024 02:20

Loving it so far. Was only supposed to watch one episode but I'm 4 episodes in now and have to be up for work in less than 4 hours 🫢

Not loving RCB, his huge rubbery face puts me off. Wouldn't turn down Aidan Turner though, even with the awful tache and geography teacher clothes.

He was defo a young Jonny depp to me too

MinglingFlamingo · 24/10/2024 22:13

Just finished it

Loved it yes RCB in my head didn't look like that but Alex Hassel was fab.

My only real issue looks wise was Maud in my headings her as a racy version of Molly Weasley in Harry Potter

Also was it rivals or another book where she did an AmDram production in Cotchester

That's in (the book version of) Rivals - they do The Merry Widow and half the town is in it, including Monica, Bas and Charles.

IceStationZebra · 27/10/2024 07:33

I have loved reading the posts from two years ago with actor predictions, a few names mentioned who made it through!

I liked it. Rivals isn’t one that I have ever re-read so I was a bit rusty on some of the storyline but I thought it was really well cast, and surprised by how much I liked Fred-Fred and Valerie, they were perfect. Declan, Maud, Caitlin and Patrick were also brilliant.

Ozgirl75 · 27/10/2024 08:35

Ok I’m currently watching Patrick’s party - I always wanted to go there when I read them and now I want to EVEN MORE. It looks so much fun!
