What do you think the government will do about the energy cost, if anything?

Tax cuts? More cash handouts? Windfall tax on energy companies? Force the energy companies to lower the prices? Or nothing at all?

I'm really unsure myself at the moment. I swing from thinking surely they will do something, to thinking they really don't give a fuck and people will be left to suffer.

They don't give a fuck.
As long as they keep raking it in they don't care if people can afford to eat or have any quality of life whatsoever.
If I'd voted for them I would be so ashamed. Or maybe not, if I'd voted for them I probably wouldn't give a shit about others either.

Antarcticant · 23/08/2022 12:29

They won't do anything until we've had rioting, courts overwhelmed by people who haven't paid their bills, and mass deaths from conditions relating to living in damp, unheated homes.

Decidualcast · 23/08/2022 12:29

They don’t give a fuck. At best, there will be an increase in the monthly fuel handout.

They don’t give a fuck

BronzeSage · 23/08/2022 12:37

Totally agree, unfortunately.

Allmarbleslost · 23/08/2022 12:38

They don't give a fuck unfortunately. I honestly don't think they will do anything.

Booklover3 · 23/08/2022 12:53

They’ll do what they’ve already done. Give everyone a small freebie and then sweet FA

Booklover3 · 23/08/2022 12:53

^^ but that’s freebie will be dressed up as the best thing since sliced bread!

Marinamountainzoo · 23/08/2022 12:54

They will sit back and enjoy all of the shareholder payouts they are enjoying from the energy companies.

You are an idiot if you believe they give a flying fuck.

35965a · 23/08/2022 12:55

Of course they don’t give two fucks

AchillesLastStand · 23/08/2022 12:56

Truss will do absolutely nothing. The Tories and their voters love private free markets. They have confidence that the market will self correct and no state help will be needed. Everyone who has ever voted Tory has been voting for this. This time though it will be years before the market adjusts, maybe a decade. Welcome to the wonderful world of free market capitalism.

The energy companies have proposed a two year freeze on the current price cap. This is the path the government should be going don’t, but they won’t. Tax cuts won’t help the poorest and it would have to be a bloody big tax cut to help my household and then things like eduction and the NHS won’t get proper funding, so no thanks. The reality is reasonably comfortable middle households like mine will really struggle and those at the bottom will be left destitute.

bengalcat · 23/08/2022 12:58

They should cap costs like the French - guessing they’ll do damn all

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/08/2022 12:58

I think they will have to ( just to go against the grain!)

If people are spending all their cash on heating, there’s nothing for hospitality, retail or leisure. And these will then go bust. And we will have no economy. And they are supposed to be the party of the economy. Although they are just a pile of shite atm.

My hot yoga studio has started to cut its schedule. I really hope it survives - not sure how it will absorb a rise in energy costs given its a power intensive business.

ShadowoftheFall · 23/08/2022 14:13

I think they’ll chuck a few crumbs out, like another £150 aid payout to the poorest households, not because they care but just to have something to make a big song and dance about. Then they’ll just carry on partying, zooming round the world, eating steak and drinking chateau neuf du Pape.

crossstitchingnana · 23/08/2022 14:15

I can't believe the government are doing nothing. They were all over Covid.

EssentialGarage · 23/08/2022 14:17

I've just had my price increase for the garage, best case scenario is £1500 more a year and we are not a high use business, prices of everything are going to rise sharply.

FourTeaFallOut · 23/08/2022 14:22

If they do anything, it will only be after the new pm has chosen. They won't want that boost in the polls to be diluted.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/08/2022 14:39

Um.... do a little dance around naked while wanking into piles of cash on the floor

As they all have shares/directorships in the companies Hmm

I don't think people really grasp how much money they gave to their mates during Covid to buy shit we didn't need - what we need is a journalist to calculate how much money/property/investments each member of the Cabinet has

I bet there's not one that only has their salary..

christmas2022 · 23/08/2022 14:42

Did you know they are giving us £400 off our bills in £66 monthly payments to energy providers?

ConsuelaHammock · 23/08/2022 14:45

I don’t think they’ll do very much more than they’ve already done.
Whats a hot yoga studio? Is it literally a studio that’s really hot?

They might not give it to everyone, Truss has already stated this. For example, DH is ‘high-earner’ tax payer earning £55k and I’m a disabled SAHM. We already lose half the child benefit. Paying the mortgage and the huge energy bills is going to be very difficult for us. We are lucky we are not due to remortgage until 2026.

RudsyFarmer · 23/08/2022 15:13

Apparently a variety of measures have been drawn up, the government will decide which option to pick. I thought the windfall tax was happening. Did I imagine that?

A mere drop in ocean isn’t it? The average household will be paying something like £4500 extra - not total, extra - on top of their pre-energy crisis bills every year. And we have no clue how long this will last. Certainly longer than 12 months though.
