Odd names!

Eliode2000 · 22/08/2022 16:18

Hi! Tell me if you've got an odd name/spelling or if you know somebody who has!

I'm Eliode (pronounced El-o-D) but the normal spelling is Elodie. I know of nobody else that has my spelling. It's quite annoying.

My mum was Elizabeth, nicknamed Lizzie but everybody spelt it wrong; Lizzy, Lissie, Lissy, Lizy, Lizie, Lizze ect.

My un-born daughter is to be called Isadora Mirabel Elouisa Elizabeth. Its very hard to spell.

xxx Eliode

Yes your parents spelled your name wrong. How can Eliode sound the same as Elodie? You could change it by deed poll. Now you're about to do the same with your daughter (Elouisa). Why four names, isn't it a bit much? Even the royals don't do that any more.

Whatwherehowwhenwho · 22/08/2022 16:26

You are quite identifiable in real life if that’s how your name is spelt compared to how it’s pronounced.

BerryHibiscus · 22/08/2022 16:26

I knew an Elysia, pronounced Aleesha. The name in itself isn't odd, but I thought the pronunciation was.

If you find it annoying that people are misspelling your name, why give your daughter a name you think will be difficult also?

Soubriquet · 22/08/2022 16:29

Well, your name is spelt incorrectly and does not flow as Elodie…so that’s your parents fault.

My name is also spelt incorrectly. Years of telling people they were wrong whilst I was growing up

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 22/08/2022 16:30

My dh has a name with ae in it. Fil spells it ea.... Luckily his bc is correct.

Yeah. I would have said "El-i-sia"

Luckily! Mm. Your FIL should try and get out the habit!

Elouisa is dreadful. Eloise or Louisa are pretty.
You have -el El.. El going on there

The name is very long and will more than likely not fit on any forms.
It's 15 syllables without the surname.

My mum liked exotic names and Eliode is certainly unusual..... Everyone calls me "Eli-o-D" which I understand.

Poor you. I understand.

My aunt is Mitchell
It's meant to be Michelle pronounced Mish-elle but she was assumed to be a boy called Mitch-ul
She hated it, goes by Missy to try and avoid confusion.

Yes @KirstenBlest Luckily, I have had that checked out and just about fine, we have a short surname. Thank you for your opinion on Elouisa. I have already considered that already on a different post. Lots of people said what you are saying

I have grown to love my name and I am used to now having to spell it out. As I presume you mean Elouisa, its her middle name and not going to be used often

Umm. I haven't got perfect words for this. I am Eliode pronounced "El-o-D" And thats what my late mum chose and that's what I like as my name.

Your kids name is a wind up surely?

Imagine saddling a child with that mouthful for the rest of their life.

Beyond pretentious and even more so if you’ve had a lifetime of incorrect spellings/pronunciation of your own name.

My other daughters have 4 names. My husband would have wanted that for all his girls. You can call me "Eli-oh-D" if you want but I will tell you it's wrong. I agree, it is not a common spelling but that's what my mum chose.

I'd also like to say that this isn't really a post for criticising my parents spelling or my own. Thank you!

Hi, no wind up here. I rarely use my middle name and neither does anyone I know. They just have to say 'I'm Isadora (surname)' I haven't had a lifetime, I love my name. All I have to say is when somebody writes down "Eliode with E-L-I-O-D-E" It's way quicker than you think. I can just say, "It's El-oh-D, thank you"

I think you misunderstood what I was saying, just that people reading this will know who you are in real life.

S*! Whoops! I am so so sorry! That's kinda true. I doubt anyone's going to meet me. I keep myself to myself in real life. On here I splurge. Thanks though. And I'm so sorry. I'm not that good at identifying stuff online.

Yeah i doubt there are many Eliode's and you've used it as your username. Anyone who knows you in real life will be able to identify you on here.

k, agreed. I don't really mind that my friends and family can see me here. I am open with them and i kinda doubt they would even care if I was on here or not.

Did your parents have dyslexia? I’m struggling to understand how they got that spelling from Elodie.

I quite like the names you’ve chosen for your daughter although I think Mirabel is going to date and Elouisa is quite ugly. Eloise, Heloise and Louisa are much nicer.

My mum may have. My mum was a bit unusual in taste of names and I don't think my dad cared much. They didn't research it at all. Apparently it could have been my great-grandma's name. My family history is vague.

Do you prefer Christabel than Mirabel?

A heck of a lot of people online detest Elouisa. I have had that comment countless times.
