If you had a week away…

In Oct/Nov/Dec, no kids, where would you go?
Dh and I are celebrating 20 years together this year and are treating ourselves to a week away somewhere, my sister is going to move in to be with the kids (they’re not really young but they’d need someone around over the week, they love her and her boyfriend so I’m pleased they’ll have a lovely time), we just don’t know where. We have discussed Cape Verde (is there much to do?), Greek island (too much like something we might do with the kids?) and can’t really make any decisions!
We like a bit of pool time, not too fussed about beach, do like being by the sea but it’s not a deal breaker, like a bit of sightseeing, boat trip somewhere maybe, I don’t know - too much choice is making us indecisive!

What’s your budget?

BarrelOfOtters · 18/08/2022 21:39

Greek island would be cold.

id probably go to Mallorca and stay in a classy boutique hotel in Palma, then get the little train to soller…

or southern Spain, Malaga is ace dirt, train or car to Granada and cordoba. Lovely places to eat and sta6 and good chance of decent weather.

pr fez and marrakech.

NegroniNonna · 18/08/2022 21:40

Andalusia

5zeds · 18/08/2022 21:40

What’s your budget

CosmopolitanPlease · 18/08/2022 21:43

We went to Sharm in October for dh's 40th and did a day trip to the pyramids etc, it was fantastic. Just the right temperature, hot but not unbearable.

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2022 21:53

Thanks, yeah we did think Greece/islands would be too chilly obviously later in the year.
No real budget in mind, I guess up to about 5K? Don’t know, hadn’t really thought about that side of it.

Antigua. Lovely place, enough to do for a week.

Soproudoflionesses · 18/08/2022 22:04

Thailand?

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2022 22:04

Sorry, for some reason I hadn’t seen the other responses! Thanks to you all too, will look at them now.

Friends who have an anniversary in November always do a Caribbean island over that week and their photos always look amazing!

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2022 22:05

Antigua and Thailand a bit far for a week? I don’t know!

But these are my favourite suggestions 😂

Iceland

Takingabreakagain · 18/08/2022 22:09

How about Italy? That should be warm enough in October. You could have a few days in a city like Rome sightseeing, boat trip along the river etc and then a few days by the sea somewhere (I'll have to let more experienced Italy goers suggest somewhere nice)

whiteroseredrose · 18/08/2022 22:10

I'd go to Jordan. A few days doing the sights then a couple of days snorkelling in the Red Sea.

Or alternatively Egypt. Cairo, Nile cruise then again a couple of days on a different part of the Red Sea.

Or Istanbul. Lots to see but no beach (not keen on beaches anyway!)

CharlotteSt · 18/08/2022 22:11

Agree re Andalucia. Nerja is gorgeous. Personally I would go to Seville and go to a luxury hotel with a pool.

shazshaz · 18/08/2022 22:12

Just watch out for the hurricane season if you choose the Caribbean. I think if its for a week I would avoid long haul and go somewhere like the Canaries, that way you don't have any jet lag to get over.

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2022 22:19

We love what we’ve seen of Italy in the past.
Yes hurricane season isn’t the most fun, my family are from the Caribbean and I’ve been there through some, quite scary and not what I’d consider conducive to relaxing! Plus I agree about long haul for just a week. It’s mainly because I’m trying to save leave to carry over into next year, we could really go for a bit longer but we kind of just plumped for a week.

I’ve never fancied Egypt for some reason, I’ve written off a few places in my head and never been…

Oct - Croatia
(locals say they regularly enjoy an Indian Summer - after the rain in September) - risky but do-able - I’m doing Neilson Beachclub Alana near Zadar - indoor spa for if the weather turns…

Nov - Southern Turkey
eg west of Antalya, warm enough for sea swimming, not too hot for walking and exploring (Paloma Hotel Beldibi - upgrade to a high floor family suite with balcony)

Dec - The Canaries
shorter days, but still good for beach walking, and usually really good deals as everyone at home is madly busy getting ready for Xmas (Tui Magic Life Esquinzo)

BarrelOfOtters · 18/08/2022 22:31

We did a Nile cruise in January. Honestly it was on of the best holidays I’ve ever had. So interesting, great food. There’s bugger all boats out there at the moment so yo7 have monuments to yourselves.

loubieloo4 · 18/08/2022 22:31

Norway, right at the top! Fly to Oslo-Tromso.Drive from tromso to Alta and back again via Senja.

We went at the end of September for our 20th wedding anniversary and had the most amazing time. We hired a car (with snow chains!) the scenery is breathtaking. We stayed at Huskey lodges in Alta in a wigwam which was one of the highlights of the trip. Lying in bed with the log burner on watching the northern lights whilst getting merry on champagne 🥂

We saw the lights every night with some lasting hours. It's up there with one of our favourite places to go.

felulageller · 18/08/2022 22:35

Iceland?

Personally I'd do Italy - Rome, Venice and Florence/Pisa. Go by train to make it more romantic.

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2022 22:44

we quite fancy a hot holiday, Croatia looks beautiful but the weather is less reliable as the year goes on.
We aren’t romantic people and spending time on a train isn’t In any way appealing 😂

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2022 22:45

But the Norwegian trip does sound lovely!
