Horrible dress fashions

Ive been looking for a summery dress, Im an old bird, but Idont want little house on the prairie frocks with frills at the hem and long enough to drag on the floor.
Nor do I want an above the knee with tiers, all in the most awful patterns.
Almost all with long sleeves. Whatever happened to "naice" elegant dresses😡

This is rather lovely, if you happen to be a size 12.

MinnieMountain · 16/08/2022 17:08

Don’t forget the weird cut-out bits.

balalake · 16/08/2022 18:34

What happened? Primark and Sports Direct, together with some other so-called fashion retailers, dragged this country into the mediocrity of fast fashion. Our high street and online clothing retailing is a disgrace.

They’re all like Victorian nightdresses or they’re missing large pieces at the back or the sides.

Or they’re bum skimmers.

JubileeTissues · 16/08/2022 18:48

I've got a couple. Feel like I should be skipping across the meadow to milk my cow.

Don’t forget the weird cut-out bits.

This is my pet hate at the moment. Every time I see a dress I like, I then go on to realise that either half the back is missing, or it has weird cut outs at the waist.

VerifiedBot2351 · 16/08/2022 18:58

There is an awful fashion for dresses at the moment. They look like maternity dresses from the early 80s.

Wouldloveanother · 16/08/2022 19:12

Theres currently 287 styles of shoes on the New Look website in a size 9, is it really that bad?

Wouldloveanother · 16/08/2022 19:22

Wrong thread! Sorry

AuntMasha · 16/08/2022 19:46

I like a nice long cotton dress, but I don’t want to look like I’m in a polygamous marriage, thank you.

noodlezoodle · 16/08/2022 20:18

There are tons out there but you do have to pick your way through the tiers and ruffles. What sort of shape and style do you like OP? Am sure we can find some that might work for you.

I've seen quite a few women recently wearing tired dresses that look like they've been made from my nan's sheets in the 1970s. They're sort of glorious and dreadful in equal measure.

Superbabe64 · 16/08/2022 20:32

They're god awful. I'm 57 and never been in to floral or frills. I literally just shop in COS now

Bluevelvetsofa · 16/08/2022 20:37

I like the button through waisted dresses. Nobody’s Child has them, but then there are some that have bows on the sleeve, or tiers or frills. Can’t be doing with frills and tiers.

Same. I have a couple of cos dresses that are a cross between Professor McGonagall academic robes and a navy sack and my beau ideal for clothing.

CornflowerBlue62 · 16/08/2022 20:59

The trouble with Cos (or rather with me) is that it looks so sophisticated and deconstructed on the hanger and goes on like a navy bedsheet 😐

thereisonlyoneofme · 17/08/2022 11:00

noodlezoodle Im a16, 72, and have a huge tum. Not a frilly person.
Ive been resorting to trousers, leggings, and a tunic top. Woul d like to get my legs out now and again though !

I find Seasalt good for plain linen dresses which are a reasonable length - on-line so easy shopping

JenniferBarkley · 17/08/2022 11:53

I dunno. I've just bought https://www.marksandspencer.com/floral-v-neck-tie-waist-midi-tiered-dress/p/clp60556179 and it feels like I'm wearing a nightdress in terms of comfort, but looks that bit more put together than jeans and t shirt.

thereisonlyoneofme · 17/08/2022 20:40

I was in M&S yesterday, most of the dresses were maxi, and no size 16s ! Loads of 10 and 12, I always find this with M &S I think 16 is an average size for their customers and they never order enough. I wont buy linen because it creases just by looking at it ! Also in Next, horrible stuff, I do have a Seasalt one, but their patterns are horrible too

I recently bought a broderie dress in Jigsaw, a crinkle gauze one from Gap (both knee length and cotton) and a long, straight linen one from NRBY. I quite like a long dress but no flounces thanks, I want to avoid looking like I've wandered out in my nightie.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/08/2022 07:46

Beware M&S @noodlezoodle - Their viscose is mostly vile, crinkly, scratchy stuff.

I find the opposite. It looks shapeless on the hanger but goes on much nicer.
