Horrible dress fashions

Ive been looking for a summery dress, Im an old bird, but Idont want little house on the prairie frocks with frills at the hem and long enough to drag on the floor.
Nor do I want an above the knee with tiers, all in the most awful patterns.
Almost all with long sleeves. Whatever happened to "naice" elegant dresses😡

It's awful this year. And if you find a nice one it's 100% polyester.

My 15 year old DD gave up. on the Victorian nightdresses (good to. know she is not the. only one calling them this). And unfortunately puffed sleeves are also still going strong.

We found a couple of jersey dresses at outdoor shops but they are above knee.

noodlezoodle thanks for those, they are out of 16s mostly, except for the M & one. I might give that a whirl. I wish theyd use dumpy old women as models so you can see how they would look onyu !

It’s dreadful. It’s as if they have given up on women completely, and are only providing for sweethearts (house on the prairie) or ladies of easy virtue. Of course , this may be true, given many retailers involvement in the great pronoun debacle.

i haven’t any suggestions really, I succumbed to Shein and the fabric would be lightweight for a mosquito net. Serves me right, really. I recently made myself a t shirt dress with some ‘slight stretch’ cotton which was not too complex and is really ….not bad.

i’m generally not a dress wearer but when I do need something I find Boden usually has something that does the job.

Beware M&S @noodlezoodle - Their viscose is mostly vile, crinkly, scratchy stuff.

Oh that's good to know. I find it bizarre how much the quality of viscose differs - seems to be a wider spectrum than other fabrics.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/08/2022 19:07

@noodlezoodle Absolutely! And even in the same shop. I have a couple of M&S ones that feel lovely, but most are horrible. Ditto Fatface and Whistles. The only way to tell is to touch them, so it makes ordering online a right lottery! Then again, sizing is so inconsistent too that I try not to order online.

DontDoThatGeorge · 18/08/2022 19:12

I wore my most polygamous Victorian nightdress to work a few weeks ago in the Heat. I spent most of the day getting variously trapped and strangled with the hem under the wheels of my office chair. It was quite traumatic and I had to leave 2 Teams meetings in an awful hurry.

COS for work again.

limitededitionbarbie · 18/08/2022 19:34

There is some lovely stuff on shein. I got some bits delivered today.

I find the opposite. It looks shapeless on the hanger but goes on much nicer.

Grin

😐hmph! I suppose you’re tall and sylph-like and spend your time arranged in artlessly graceful poses.

Maireas · 21/08/2022 17:12

I hear what you're all saying.
I want natural fabrics, not see through, not frilly, tiered or layered, no cut out bits, no abdomen on show.
I have money to spend.
You'd think I was asking for unicorn tears. It's not great clothed shopping, is it? When will retailers cater for regular women. (not frumps 😉 )

MissyB1 · 21/08/2022 17:17

It’s the bloody awful sleeves!! Even if the cut of the dress is relatively ok, the huge billowing sleeves ruin it! I’m not planning to carry pails of milk across my shoulders thanks.
The sad thing is the autumn dresses look like they are continuing the trend 😡

Maireas · 21/08/2022 17:21

No! The trend continues?! Please let it end. Those sleeves are hideous.
I'd look like Bo Peep's Nan.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/08/2022 17:44

The trouble with voluminous sleeves is that they work on the assumption that you'll never wear a jacket/ cardigan.

  1. a precarious assumption with British weather
  2. if it is warm enough to not require an emergency layer, you'll probably encounter air con that makes you require it.

I haven't bought dresses for a few years other than for a formal occasion

Wouldloveanother · 21/08/2022 17:45

I am SO done with the Bavarian milkmaid look and anything cropped. Mom jeans and Birkenstocks can stay however.

maeveiscurious · 21/08/2022 17:51

I'm tall and I can assure you if you have any chest you look like a serving wench and it makes your shoulders broader Confused

TheVolturi · 21/08/2022 17:53

Holly Willoughby wears these type she's probably made them popular!

TheVolturi · 21/08/2022 17:53

This type!
