big spiders appearing in house, just me?

Over the last month or so we have had a sudden increase in really big spiders appearing in the house. Mostly upstairs. Both dd and I have had the dubious pleasure of monsters running over us in bed at night and that has never happened before in the 15 years we’ve lived here. Is it because of the hot weather? We have been opening the windows overnight to try to get cool enough to sleep but this has never happened before.

is it just us? And any tips on how to prevent it because honestly it’s freaking us out!

Peppermint oil with water and spray. They hate it. I have been known to spray my bedding!

It's the time of year they come in.

Annabananna1 · 16/08/2022 12:26

Loads here south east

Ridingthegravytrain · 16/08/2022 12:29

Not do many giant house spiders (yet) but an awful lot of huge creepy false widows. They really give me the shivers. Ugh

TheHorrorOfIt · 16/08/2022 12:29

Yes - a bit earlier in the year than normal, but perhaps mating season has come early due to the heatwave. I’ve seen at least half a dozen monsters already

JuniperStJames · 16/08/2022 12:30

Right, I’m off out to buy peppermint oil this afternight. Last night’s visitor was so big I heard it run across the bottom sheet towards me before I saw it. I may never sleep happily in that bed again.

Same here, never seen anything like the one that ran across my legs a few days ago. Literally as big as the palm or my hand 😱

Peridot1 · 16/08/2022 12:32

Same here. Me so big in my room the other night I thought it was a mouse.

hilariousnamehere · 16/08/2022 12:40

Not (yet) in my room but have had two enormous ones in front porch cupboard / on my doorstep in last few days and I've not seen spiders in the house for the last 5-6 years so something is definitely different this year. I hate them :'(

gamerchick · 16/08/2022 12:44

Most of them live in your house. They do the pest control thing. They're starting to come out to mate. Then they'll go away again to have their babies.

You can use stuff to repel them from rooms I think though. I wouldn't want them in bed with me.

Beebumble2 · 16/08/2022 12:45

We’ve got them, but they do live off other creepy crawlies and clothes moths!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 16/08/2022 12:45

You need to get to the root of the problem and sprays won't help. Even brand new houses have hidey holes where spiders can breed, procreate and multiply which they do. Eventually the problem spills out into the house which is what you are seeing now. Get the house fumigated with a smoke product by a professional company. This will sort the problem out. I had mine done when I moved in here 2 years ago after seeing several spiders with hob nail boots on around the house and haven't seen a single spider since. I think it needs doing every 5 years.
Plants growing up the outside of the house dont help either spiders love living in ivy.

One so big!

Mamapep · 16/08/2022 13:05

Weird- a spider ran over me the other night in bed, never happened to me before

Popplebop · 16/08/2022 13:26

I wish I hadn’t read this thread…might never be able to sleep ever again.

KatherineofGaunt · 18/08/2022 10:18

I first read this thread title a couple of days ago and thought 'Yeah, we've got lots of big spiders in our house' so didn't click.

I've just had the fright of my life with a genuinely big spider so now I know what you mean, OP! I thought you were talking about those leggy spiders, that I can basically ignore and that we have several of living in various high corners. But I was just cleaning down the back of the sofa and came across one that genuinely looked as big as the palm of my hand, with its big body and legs all bent up. Oh my god. I've never seen one inside so big!! My poor DH had to stop work to come and put it outside.

I'm off to find some conkers and to shut all my windows and buy some peppermint spray. And potentially move to the Moon.

hilariousnamehere · 29/08/2022 21:44

Just come across an enormous one running along my garage wall - not happy, but I don't suppose it is either. I wish I knew why they are so massive and so early this year - am also considering moving to the moon 😂

WolverineBluey · 29/08/2022 21:52

Arg this is a terrifying thread! Had to chuck out a particularly big one from the bedroom wall the other night - will now be dreading them joining me in bed!!

We have a lot of white/ minimalist decor in the house and for once I think DP was on to something. Being able to see them coming on light carpets and walls has made spiders a whole less scary. On the whole I don't mind them as much as I used to.

Interested in the peppermint oil thing as we also have a mouse and have read that keeps them away too.

Notplayingball · 29/08/2022 21:53

Just spotted a huge one in my stairwell! Huge.

lotsofthem · 29/08/2022 21:55

Yes 😢

guineapugs · 29/08/2022 21:59

Huge brown house spiders in our house. At least our false widow numbers are decreasing though.

DancingBudgie · 29/08/2022 22:16

Had three absolute whoppers in my home this past week.
I'm terrified of them. If one ran over me in bed, I swear the entire street would think I was being murdered in it.

Starsinyoureyes13 · 29/08/2022 22:20

Big spiders in your house just means they looking to have nookie, they come inside to mate and as far as I know th bigger ones are female, where you'll find one, you'll bet it's mate is nearby

Starsinyoureyes13 · 29/08/2022 22:23

A false widow spider is the size of a 50p, it has a dark brown back with white markings on its back almost skull like. The legs are a
Green brown colour

Do you have any further info?

What was the specific treatment called?
