big spiders appearing in house, just me?

Over the last month or so we have had a sudden increase in really big spiders appearing in the house. Mostly upstairs. Both dd and I have had the dubious pleasure of monsters running over us in bed at night and that has never happened before in the 15 years we’ve lived here. Is it because of the hot weather? We have been opening the windows overnight to try to get cool enough to sleep but this has never happened before.

is it just us? And any tips on how to prevent it because honestly it’s freaking us out!

Sorry for reactivating thread guys, I needed to expunge my stress 😂

@guineapugs yep those are the buggers - whyyyyyy are they so massive?! 😭

WindyKnickers · 29/08/2022 22:31

I've just had to remove a massive one from the stairs. It required a pint glass for scooping up!!

They’re Tegenaria gigantea (or Eratigena, I can’t remember if they were reclassified or not a few years ago).

And I am fucking terrified of them.

When I lived just outside of north London, they had the nickname of The Hertfordshire Horror as they are anecdotally 30% larger than the usual T.domestica ones.

They come out at this time of year for a shag.

I used to hold & pet them, until I was 17 & staying with my boyfriend. I popped on his dressing gown & through the was stroking my arm… and the biggest bloody sodding spider was strolling down my arm. Bloody terrified ever since.

My scalp is tightening just writing this.

#know your enemy lol

Good god, why did I start reading this in bed.

They live in your house all year, they just come out to mate in September and then hide away again.

I saved one’s life last night despite being terrified, and I’ve just found another one - definitely not the same as different sizes.

I can’t stand the thought of them in my bed, anything else I can just about cope with.

People keep telling me they just come out to mate, as though understanding that's going to make it better - I don't want more of the fuckers being produced!!

I wish I wasn't so scared of them, I know they're amazing creatures but if they could just be amazing far, far away from me and my house that'd be great!!

I was responding to posters who said they come in from outside.

I don't think we're getting more spiders than usual in the house - we just leave them be unless they're huge - but we've had loads of those ones with very small bodies and extremely long thin legs on the outside of the house, great clusters of them at times on the white stucco, and it's weird because I don't think I've ever seen them here before. V occasionally one has ventured into the house and been removed.
