Graduation gift

My son graduates as a Doctor at the end of the year (all being well). I’ve been trying to think of a gift without much luck. I wanted to get something that will last, can be useful or ornamental. Any ideas?

Some equipment he needs once he's actually doctoring?

Or something more querky. I found this site which has some fun ideas: giftlab.co/gifts-for-doctors/

Glass paperweight

CakeUpWall · 15/08/2022 14:23

DS has just done the same - it was 6 years of hard work and financial hardship, and we wanted to give him something special.
We bought him a nice DSLR camera, and gave it to him a few days before graduation so that he could get to grips with it. He was delighted, and has got some suberb photos from the day to treasure.
Best of luck to your son! 🙂

My daughter asked for a matching necklace for her first graduation and then a gold filigree bracelet for her second - she wears them every day
So how about a watch for your son?

Had2Be · 15/08/2022 14:30

@Pr1mr0se just had a quick look at that link, the band aid sticky notes are good as a fun gift. I’ll have a proper look later thanks.

@CakeUpWall He’s not at all interested in photography. Thanks for the good luck wishes and the same to your son.

I got a drawing representing her uni city with text on saying her degree/name/date etc. I think it was on etsy and they did all the different uni towns. Framed it and it looked lovely

A proper stethoscope engraved with his initials? Useful in everyday and something practical too!

Had2Be · 15/08/2022 14:37

@Cinders15 We are thinking of a watch. We gave him a really nice one for his 21st, so not sure. I know some men do like a few different ones though.

A really smart doctors bag?

Had2Be · 15/08/2022 14:41

@tired17 So was it kind of like a map? We’re in Australia so might not be possible for him. I’ll have a bit of a search.

@Jaguarxxx His uncle gave him a satchel type bag at the start of his studies. It’s all nice and worn in now, it actually looks better now it’s got a bit of use.

We did this for a friend who graduated as a doctor - she still uses it.

Twizbe · 15/08/2022 14:49

I saw a programme once and a female doctor had an awesome pink stethoscope with her initials on that she'd got as a graduation gift. She loved it

Had2Be · 15/08/2022 14:56

His whole class bought stethoscopes in their first year. I think his is still going strong. I’ll try a bit of surreptitious questioning tho.
Thanks for all your ideas.

An otoscope and/ or auriscope?
Students often buy basic equipment so an upgrade can be welcome.

Jaguarxxx · 15/08/2022 15:06

Ah @Had2Be fair enough. I agree a doctors bag looks better after a bit of use. Maybe a really good fountain pen? Although prescriptions are done on the computer now aren't they...

Had2Be · 15/08/2022 15:15

@Jaguarxxx He has the most awful handwriting! Truly doctor like! I dread to think what it would look like with a fountain pen.

Had2Be · 15/08/2022 15:18

@yikesanotherbooboo I’ve been trying to get him to buy an auriscope for ages so I can have a bit of a go. I have been known to visit sporner corner now and again.

Jaguarxxx · 15/08/2022 15:27

Haha @Had2Be .. maybe a nice fountain pen would improve it! Oh well.. congratulations to your son! Star

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/08/2022 16:00

Or ophthalmoscope for that matter!

Metheven · 15/08/2022 16:30

We got our son a pair of silver cufflinks, which we then had engraved with something relevant to his degree.

Had2Be · 15/08/2022 23:40

@Metheven We also thought of cufflinks.I don’t know if he’d wear them but it would be something that he could keep forever which I like the thought of.

Metheven · 15/08/2022 23:46

@Had2Be They are a lovely keepsake, I think. Something that he will look at in years to come and think of you.

henryhoover3 · 15/08/2022 23:53

I bought my daughter a stethoscope when she graduated. You can get them in different colours and engraved
