Recommend a great TV drama?

Posting in Chat for traffic.

DH and I are looking for a nice meaty drama series to get into. We like crime / police dramas but have watched most of the popular ones already. Otherwise a thriller or mystery is good. Don't mind a bit of offbeat comedy thrown in (Dead to Me, Sex Education kind of thing).

We're not so bothered by heavy political themes or fantasy stuff, and historical drama depends on the period (Mad Men good, Bridgerton not so much).

Will also consider a complete wildcard to any of the above if it comes well recommended!

We've got plenty of options for streaming;

Now TV
Netflix
Amazon Prime
Disney+
Plus iPlayer / ITV hub / All4 etc.

Thanks in advance Smile

The Bridge, on Amazon Prime ( according to Google) it's in the original with subtitles but it's soooooo good.

Line of Duty, The Undeclared War, Unforgotten, Ozark
These have been the standouts for me over the last year

Yellowjackets. It's a bit gory in places but it had me hooked, can't wait for series 2.

GinBooksChocs · 14/08/2022 17:11

For the wildcard I really enjoyed the newsreader on BBC I player.

Just in case you haven't seen it happy Valley on I player too.

QueSyrahSyrah · 14/08/2022 17:12

Oh wow, thank you! Lots to explore already.

@GinBooksChocs Happy Valley is our favourite series ever, and we live in perpetual hope of stumbling across a show we love as much! Grin

@QueSyrahSyrah thought you may but thought I'd put it out there just in case. I can't wait for series 3.

Monkeytapper · 14/08/2022 17:17

@GinBooksChocs The Newsreader looks good, I've got lots here to add to my list but that's a good contender to start tonight, so far!

Enjoy your recommendations :)

Prime Suspect - I second. Any of the Harlem Coben on Netflix. Mindhunter - fascinating and absorbing. Real life - about FBI hunting serial killers.

unbelievable with Toni Collette - I found the first episode a bit hard to get into but stuck with it. It’s on Netflix.

otherwise Mare of Eastown with Kate Winslet on Now.

I know you said “no” to Fantasy but I thought Outlander first and second series were excellent - about the Jacobite rising which I knew v little about. Really quite gritty. It does have time travel but not really a fantasy and she only time travels once (I think to put a modern woman in 1740s Scotland).

RaininSummer · 14/08/2022 17:29

White lines on Netflix is pretty good.

Quarique · 14/08/2022 17:31

The Great
Britannia
Murders in the Bulding

Porridgeislife · 14/08/2022 17:32

White Lotus on Now TV. Dark comedy.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/08/2022 17:32

Harrow
Lie to Me
Wanted

donttalkaboutbookclub · 14/08/2022 17:40

We Own This City on Amazon Prime. Made by the same team who made The Wire, same setting, but it's only 6 episodes long, based on a true story.

carefullycourageous · 14/08/2022 17:41

Recently I have enjoyed Sherwood, The Pact, Vigil, Dr Foster.

QueSyrahSyrah · 14/08/2022 17:43

Ooh excellent; loads to investigate! Thank you all

@Hels20 I struggled with the first episode of Unbelievable and didn't watch more but a colleague has expressed the same thoughts as you so maybe I'll watch on!

Van der Valk (hope I spelt that right!)
Only murders in the building.

Hels20 · 14/08/2022 17:56

@QueSyrahSyrah - yes. Give it another go. I only became hooked about half way through second episode and thought it was brilliant. ALl 3 of the main actresses are excellent. It’s also based on real life which gave it added poignancy…it’s really shocking.

also - I thought The Tourist was great (BBC - with Jamie Dornan) or at least the first 5 episodes. The female detective also plays a victim in Unbelievable. If you aren’t gripped with Unbelievavle after second episode it isn’t for you.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/08/2022 17:58

Mare of Easttown is great.

There’s a new series of Shetland just started, and they’ve filmed the last series of Happy Valley, so hopefully that will be out soon.

carefullycourageous · 14/08/2022 18:02

I also watched Why Didn't They Ask Evans on britbox, thought that was a good version.

ThreeRingCircus · 14/08/2022 18:07

I would agree with Outlander series 1 and 2 on Prime. I think it lost its way a little bit after that but series 1 was excellent.

HannahSternDefoe · 14/08/2022 18:07

I watched The Newsreader last wk (iplayer) it was really good.
