Recommend a great TV drama?

Posting in Chat for traffic.

DH and I are looking for a nice meaty drama series to get into. We like crime / police dramas but have watched most of the popular ones already. Otherwise a thriller or mystery is good. Don't mind a bit of offbeat comedy thrown in (Dead to Me, Sex Education kind of thing).

We're not so bothered by heavy political themes or fantasy stuff, and historical drama depends on the period (Mad Men good, Bridgerton not so much).

Will also consider a complete wildcard to any of the above if it comes well recommended!

We've got plenty of options for streaming;

Now TV
Netflix
Amazon Prime
Disney+
Plus iPlayer / ITV hub / All4 etc.

Thanks in advance Smile

Yellowstone is really good

The Americans - six series/seasons so will keep you going for ages.

Set in 1980s America (so during the Cold War) - the key characters are Soviet spies living undercover as Americans. It’s excellent.

Presume you've seen Mare of Easttown?

The West Wing
How to get away with murder

The Bridge, mentioned above, is great.

Do not watch The Control Room. A complete load of drivel.

Six feet under on Now TV
Big Sky on Disney+

3 Girls. Harrowing and brilliantly done.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 14/08/2022 18:27

Anatomy of a scandal!

helpmove · 14/08/2022 18:27

Criminal UK was also great. Has some fab stars in several episodes too.

Neveranynamesleft · 14/08/2022 18:27

Yellowstone is brilliant and the prequel '1883' is even better.

There is also another prequel to come '1923' (?) cant wait for that one.

Neveranynamesleft · 14/08/2022 18:28

Also really enjoyed Tin Star

Neveranynamesleft · 14/08/2022 18:30

And 'Hidden'

EmergencyPoncho · 14/08/2022 18:33

I'm a fan and have seen most of the above. Has anyone watched Witness Number 3? I can also recommend Save Me, if you like gritty and a bit dark...

User639921 · 14/08/2022 18:35

American Rust on Now TV

PeloAddict · 14/08/2022 18:39

Witness no 3
Red rose (starts 15th of this month)
The secrets she keeps
Trigger point (season 2 isn't until next year)

toomuchlaundry · 14/08/2022 18:42

A bit of a wildcard - Offspring on Netflix. Family drama/comedy rather than meaty crime drama

SummerSazz · 14/08/2022 18:43

I tend to watch shorter things rather than long seasons but I can highly recommend Caliphate on Netflix (in Swedish with English subtitles is best although it is dubbed). So well done although harrowing in parts

I also enjoyed 'I may destroy you! (BBC iplayer) which is pretty on the edge but v powerful and also inventing Anna on Netflix (although this could have been fewer episodes imo)

Bluevelvetsofa · 14/08/2022 18:48

The Lincoln Lawyer on Betflix

Bluevelvetsofa · 14/08/2022 18:48

Netflix

Snoopsnoggysnog · 20/09/2022 22:19

Money heist?

Snoopsnoggysnog · 20/09/2022 22:24

Have you seen call my agent (the original French one)? Comedy drama - so good.

in line with your original request - the Serpent, Giri/Haji, Lupin, the Fall - are ones we enjoyed during lockdown.

ladygindiva · 20/09/2022 22:24

Dp and I have got into Vincent on Britbox. It's a 15 year old itv drama we somehow missed at the time, it has Ray Winstone in as an ex cop turned private investigator, it's bloody brilliant.

Needhelp101 · 20/09/2022 22:27

This may be the wildcard suggestion but we rewatched Squid Game the other day and my God, it's so good. Completely gripping, thought-provoking and moving. It's on Netflix - watch it in Korean, not dubbed.
