I’m pretty good with dates

I do use dates to make sure we eat the oldest things first but do not throw out food just because it's past it's sell by date. That would be madness.

Learning how to tell when food is safe to eat (or not) is an important life skill.

Relying on sell by dates is really very wasteful.

You can tell if an egg is off just by picking it up- they are really light

I eat eggs 3+ months after their date - just keep them in the fridge & do the float test in future.

houseargh · 14/08/2022 16:04

Oh god, I eat them many weeks over all the time. Eggs is one of the foods where the use by date is most meaningless

Mine live in my fridge for months sometimes, I've never been poorly.

Wouldn't do this extreme - the egg quality (and nutritional value) will be very poor.

We take ours out of the box as soon as they get home so wouldn't even know what the date is.

They will be stamped on each egg (or should be).

Jellybean23 · 14/08/2022 16:18

There's no halfway with rotten eggs. You shouldn't throw away an egg unless you crack it open first. If it smells foul and looks rotten, it's rotten. If it looks ok and smells ok, it's ok. A rotten egg, still in it's shell, can stink the kitchen out.

How did people survive a hundred years ago? They used common sense, not best before dates.

So they are! I've just checked one. I had no idea.
