I don’t even look at the dates on eggs I use eyes and nose as detector of offness
Although eggs don’t last too long in this house after being bought I’m sure you’ll be fine

NiqueNique · 14/08/2022 12:57

It’s absolutely fine. They last for months past the date.

The floating test is for freshness, not for being safe/unsafe to eat.

As long as they're not rotten they’re fine to eat, and if they’d been rotten you would have known.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 14/08/2022 13:00

Eggs don’t develop salmonella after the sell by date passes. That’s not how it works!

amylou8 · 14/08/2022 13:03

Calm down, eggs are fine for weeks, even months after their BB date. It's a BB not a UB. And when they do go off there's no mistaking it. If there's any more left make yourself a nice omlet.

blackheartsgirl · 14/08/2022 13:07

im normally ok with fresh best before/ use by dates a day or two after the date, I’ve eaten mince and sausages a couple of days after the date, smells ok so I eat it.

wasn’t aware that eggs were ok to eat weeks after the use by date though so thanks for all the info

AmbushedByCake1 · 14/08/2022 13:08

You'll be fine. I don't think I've ever looked at the date on an egg. If they are off you can smell it very strongly when you crack them open.

MissMaple82 · 14/08/2022 13:09

No you'll be fine, I'm forever doing this as I hate waste. I've never once been ill

crazy4cats · 14/08/2022 13:46

you'd know if the eggs were off - I've eaten eggs over a month after their 'use by' date and they've been fine

loopylindi · 14/08/2022 14:19

Eggs float if thy are old and the air sac at the broad end is bigger, not because of any sulphur dioxide present. That will be the protein actually in the egg going off and will be contained inside the membrane and yes, you would definitely know about it

Emmelina · 14/08/2022 14:28

If you weren’t overwhelmed by the stench when you cracked them into the pan, you’re fine :)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/08/2022 14:36

If they smelled and tasted all right, no problem.
Rotten eggs stink!

I do sometimes despair at how often MNers think this or that isn’t safe to eat. No wonder there’s such an obscene level of food waste in this country. Not that I expect most developed countries are much better.

Pink15 · 14/08/2022 14:38

It's best before so you'll be fine. I would eat that and I'm a bit obsessive in avoiding food poisoning.

GreyCarpet · 14/08/2022 14:40

I eat eggs waaay after the use buy dates..If they're kept in the fridge it's fine. I only follow the use by date if they're not and, even then, I'm a bit lax about it.

Water test and judge by the smell. Seriously, if you've eaten them, you'll be fine.

NiqueNique · 14/08/2022 14:49

I don’t keep my eggs in the fridge and I still happily eat them weeks and weeks after the date.

BeanieTeen · 14/08/2022 14:51

If the egg was off you would have known about it before eating it. You’ll be be fine.

userxx · 14/08/2022 15:00

Mine live in my fridge for months sometimes, I've never been poorly.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 14/08/2022 15:02

If they were off they would fucking stink. You'll be fine

bloodywhitecat · 14/08/2022 15:05

I keep chickens, I don't date stamp their eggs and sometimes keep them for weeks before using them. I don't refrigerator them either. If the eggs were off you would've known all about it before you ate them. You will be fine.

DappledThings · 14/08/2022 15:08

We take ours out of the box as soon as they get home so wouldn't even know what the date is.

ThomasinaGallico · 14/08/2022 15:08

Also, rather worryingly, salmonella doesn’t give away any clues as to its presence. It isn’t the type of bacteria that develops when poultry goes off - it’s there at the outset. Similar with campylobacter which is actually more common. However, chickens are routinely vaccinated against salmonella these days and both types of bacteria are destroyed by thorough and correct cooking.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/08/2022 15:10

If the yolk was a raised lump above the white they are fine.

You can eat eggs well over a month past bbd. You just have to know how to check they are ok.

GladysGeorgina · 14/08/2022 15:17

You’ll be absolutely fine. Eggs last ages. I frequently use them well after the BB date. Usually for cakes/scrambled eggs etc because fresh are better for fried, poached etc but using them won’t make you ill. My sil once made me scrambled eggs with eggs three months after the BB date. I survived without incident……..Chilled meat and dairy past the use by date is another matter and I’m much stricter about these dates.

DownNative · 14/08/2022 15:24

blackheartsgirl · 14/08/2022 12:26

It was the last two eggs from the box.

they didn’t fry up very well but I just assumed that the non stick on the pan was on its way out. They tasted ok though

Then you'll be absolutely fine! 💯

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/08/2022 15:31

If an egg is bad you know straightaway by the smell and sight of it as soon as the shell is cracked. Trust me, we have (mainly) local farm gate eggs which have no stamps or dates and in the very rare I break an off one, it's VERY immediately obvious.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 14/08/2022 15:34

Shock horror - I grew up eating undated eggs. And I lived! Also unpasteurised milk, butter churned in the kitchen, clotted cream left open on the shelf to rise overnight, and "high" game. You'll be fine.
