Leaving Air B&B review

JasmineVioletRose · 12/08/2022 01:45

Am staying in an expensive Air B&B. It's at least twice what it would have cost before lockdown I'd say. Ok so most places are.
Nice house though & the Owner is good at communicating.

But, it's right next to a really noisy rd. No one has mentioned this in reviews. And obviously there's no mention in the description.

I'm literally awake now 1:43am because of the noise. We have the windows open as its boiling hot.

It's in the countryside. Near the coast. I had no reason to expect this place would be so noisy. It's way noisier than my house in London!

My question is, should I mention this in my review? I mean it's not like the owner can do anything about it. But It's really expensive, as mentioned and it's definitely taken away from our enjoyment of the property. What would you do?

What is causing the noise at 1.43am?

Angrywife · 12/08/2022 02:00

I'd mention it. It's not a complaint but a factual review of the property.

Zonder · 12/08/2022 02:02

There was a thread recently about people being almost forced into leaving a good review. I wonder if some pressure has been put on people not to mention the noise.

Or maybe genuinely there isn't usually noise. It does seem odd to be so loud so late at night.

I’d mention it in your review in an “unfortunately we found the busy road outside disturbed our sleep so possibly not the place for you if you’re a light sleeper” sort of way but I wouldn’t mark the rating down for it. It’s just one of those things that some people notice more than others, probably hence why no mention in the reviews, and if nobody has commented on it before the owner would have no reason to include a warning.

Yes was thinking of mentioning in this sort of way. I wouldn't have booked it, had I read a review saying this though. But feels dishonest not to mention at all.

avamiah · 12/08/2022 02:17

How much are you paying to stay there if you don’t mind me asking?

flyingant · 12/08/2022 02:25

Maybe worth mentioning that people should bring earplugs if they sleep with the windows open?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 12/08/2022 02:27

Are you next to a motorway? How much traffic can there be at this time of the morning?

JasmineVioletRose · 12/08/2022 02:30

Not next to a motorway. It's a small village not far from a port. I guess it's a main route to get somewhere. It's really not a big rd though & is surrounded by countryside.

You say it’s really expensive?

So why did you book it in the first place and not book a 4/5 star hotel ?

garlictwist · 12/08/2022 05:28

We stayed in an Air Bnb in Cyprus that turned out to be above a night club. The noise at night was insane, we didn't sleep at all. Yet NONE of the reviews had mentioned it (I did in mine!) It was so weird.

Because some people like the flexibility and extra space you get in a rental??

Greycatclub · 12/08/2022 06:17

You could mention it as a courtesy to other guests but the rating should be based on the actual accommodation used.

I wouldn’t have expected it to be mentioned in the listing.

Ilovechoc12 · 12/08/2022 06:33

I wrote on the review 2 weeks ago about the noise. There was 14 reviews on the house - all excellent which I would of NEVER booked if I’d of known a busy road with constant traffic

The woman next door was a piano / singing teacher with constant lessons and a barking dog next door with constant traffic every minute. I couldn’t sleep at all I was a complete zombie and it totally ruined our break as no one could sleep including 3 children.

Like you say not one person mentioned the noise which I thought was beyond crazy.

Even my husband who never complains said it was bad and he tried to move me into a hotel 😂😂😂😂

Which town you close to? Wonder if it’s the same one as I had …… we were in Devon.

it has put me off air B and B - at least with a hotel you get proper double / triple glazing - next time I will try and work out if it’s on a busy through road….. or defo book a hotel if there is availability.

Hopefully you manage to get some zzzzz

I agree with the PP above about not reducing your rating but instead saying, alongside all the good things in your review "The only slight negative was that the road nearby was busier than I expected at night, but earplugs would solve that if you sleep with the windows open"

Mindymomo · 12/08/2022 06:43

Unfortunately if you give a bad review, the owner sees it before it’s posted and then contacts you to ask you to remove any negative parts. We regularly use cottages and read reviews first. I would certainly like to know if it was on a busy road. We take our dog and although they say secure garden, it’s nice to read from fellow dog owners that it is safe.

Your question is why do people book luxury self catering as opposed to luxury hotel? It's usually because they prefer the privacy, space and flexibility of self catering.

Genevie82 · 12/08/2022 06:48

I’ve had this too OP in cornwall once- air bnb holiday cottage and when we got there a small but well used B road very close by. You could really hear traffic from the garden and if I’d know we wouldn’t have booked - little in the reviews about it when I checked .. think you have to say something measured like great place for a base to relax and explore but if windows open you can hear the traffic .. something like that! .. hope your holiday isn’t too spoilt

bevelino · 12/08/2022 06:52

All e-commerce rental platforms have fake reviews. There are even organisations that will write glowing reviews for owners.

NewMoney1000000 · 12/08/2022 08:23

I think you should mention the road/noise.

Not on Airbnb. Both have to leave a review and you only see what they have written once you have done that and it's published. You can then dispute what they've written but it's there for all to see.

fussychica · 12/08/2022 08:55

We use Airbnb all the time, though mainly outside the UK. I definitely think you should mention the road noise. I'm amazed no one else has if it's that bad. Obviously if others haven't needed to sleep with the windows wide open then it wouldn't have caused the same level of sleep disruption for them so I'd reflect that in the review.

We always look on Google Earth to see if we can see the property and assess the general area. Sorry your holiday has been marred by this.

Yes this sounds reasonable. Thanks 😊
