Free samples being delivered, but I haven't ordered anything. What's going on???

Yesterday, I arrived home to a neighbour banging on my door to tell me I've received "some post"

He passed me three Evri parcels, perfectly addressed to me, which combined, weighed about half a stone.

Each one contained multiple laminate flooring samples.

Today, I came home to find a free sample of Sylk lube (addressed to one "Dorothy Merryweather" but my address) and a Royal Mail note through my door to tell me they've left a parcel with my next door neighbours.

When I knocked, she passed me multiple boxes of more laminate flooring samples, some tweed carpet samples and two boxes of fake grass samples.

I'm freaked.

I don't know anyone well enough for pranks like this to be funny or normal and my family and colleagues are denying all knowledge

I've just paid £25 to be registered with Cifas and now I'm here, asking for advice.

WTF do I do??

Rather than it being a prank, it does look more like someone is trying to piss you off.

Who???

Gingernaut · 10/08/2022 19:14

I've no idea.

I'm nobody, I go out of my way not to piss people off and I'm shy about giving out my address.

I have no idea.

I want to nip this in the bud before the porn catalogues show up....

This is creepy, OP. Are the samples from the same company? If so, can you contact them and ask for your name/address to be blocked? If it continues, keep a record of everything that arrives and have a word with the police.

Transformatio · 10/08/2022 19:47

I started receiving loads of random marketing mail sent to me a couple of decades back now - clearly in response to something being filled in. I contacted at least one of the companies to check this was the case and one of them sent me the handwritten information request form back. It was FIL. He did it because I moaned about junk mail once and thought it was funny.

I think it is likely to be something like this. Obviously you won’t be able to get the handwriting now but if you contact the company you may get some clues from them…

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/08/2022 19:50

I'd just bin them and forget it.

Gingernaut · 10/08/2022 19:50

Different companies, different samples types.

I'm guessing it is a 'prank' of some kind.

I have contacted the companies to tell them to stop sending me stuff and to delete my details from the databases

Gingernaut · 11/08/2022 16:50

And today, brochures.

ConservatoryLand
Wren Kitchens
Riviera Coach Travel and
a full set of Saga brochures.

All addressed to me or a variation of my name.

I am thoroughly pissed off.

Sounds like someone's trying to wind you up.

Maybe hang on to them all , see how long it goes on for and then have a word with the police.

I'd not tell anyone and see if anyone mentions it in passing .

Gingernaut · 12/08/2022 07:07

They've succeeded

I've photographed the pile of junk and I'm returning the brochures to their respective senders later.

As well as being mean to you, those companies sending heavy samples have paid.

be careful answering the door - next time it might be something you have to pay for. You need to find the wanker and give em what for.

Gingernaut · 12/08/2022 09:27

All of these parcels are either bulky and/or heavy.

The brochures came in complete sets - like telephone directories.

A lot of time money and effort went into these parcels.

The sheer waste on stuff I would never have ordered is another factor in this

I have a stereotypically, but often misspelled Irish name and some of the parcels are addressed to some of the misspelled variations

It's someone I know. They know this shit pisses me off.

EmmaH2022 · 12/08/2022 15:59

Gingernaut do you mean you know who it is?

moistmingemist · 12/08/2022 16:16

Whatever you do don't tell anyone because you run the risk of telling the idiot who is doing this. Just wait and see if they come out of the woodwork as they'll be itching to ask you if you've received them.

As my dad once said, always do the opposite of what people expect!

ShitPuffin · 12/08/2022 16:20

I’m sorry, OP. But this really made me laugh. 😂

(But I would not be laughing if I was you and I should know better.)

hotfroth · 12/08/2022 16:24

I agree with a pp. Say nothing to anybody, and see whether someone gives the game away by trying to ask in a round about way.

Just contact the companies, and get them to remove your details.

How many of your family and friends know your email address? Just in case you start getting inundated with those as well...

Gingernaut · 17/08/2022 10:25

This shit's not funny now

Do you have an incline who it may be?

Gingernaut · 17/08/2022 10:30

My family would never send anything to me like this.

They have the same issues with racism and 'getting names wrong' and would go equally ballistic for the same reasons I do.

Anyone who knows me well enough to prank me, knows me well enough to know this shit don't fly.

OP posts:
Gingernaut · 17/08/2022 10:31

I have absolutely no idea.

OP posts:
HollowTalk · 17/08/2022 10:33

Even if the OP contacted the companies they would just say she'd ordered them if they are samples.

If someone has paid for them, then they'll know from bank records who it is, though I doubt they'll tell you anything.

Do you have a partner? Some of those things are really personal.

User478 · 17/08/2022 10:51

Are you a teacher/work with teenagers?
This is exactly the sort of "funny" prank a bored teenager would find hilarious

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/08/2022 10:54

Could be worth asking what email address has been supplied against each order.

Sswhinesthebest · 17/08/2022 11:01

If you don’t react they’ll soon get bored.

IcedOatLatte · 17/08/2022 11:09

Sswhinesthebest · 17/08/2022 11:01

If you don’t react they’ll soon get bored.

How will whoever is doing it know if she reacts or not?

I assume she's not updating a daily blog on deliveries, unless the person lives in the same house they will have no idea what the affect on her is surely

Gingernaut · 17/08/2022 11:10

Not a teacher.

Don't know anyone with teenagers

Sent the companies my email address and asked them to wipe it off their databases with my name and address.
