Have you ever lost a shoe on a motorway?

Just wondering, as every motorway seems to have a random shoe on the hard shoulder every few miles. Do people throw them out the window during family arguments? Are they lying on the back seat with their feet up on the open window? I can't help thinking that every shoe must have an interesting backstory.

I have also thought this, and am very interested in theories...

BettyOBarley · 08/08/2022 18:51

No, but toddler DS did throw his out of the window on a dual carriageway once! (We stopped and picked it up though!)

incognitodorrito · 08/08/2022 18:53

Following.. great question, I’ve always wondered this too.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 08/08/2022 18:53

I'd never thought about this really, but you're absolutely right!! Am off up North next week, so will be glued to the passing motorway looking for shoes 😂

JaninaDuszejko · 08/08/2022 18:53

I once was behind a car with one of those storage units on top of the car and it was slightly open and clothes were coming out as they drove down the motorway so that might be one reason.

winniesanderson · 08/08/2022 18:55

I would like to know this too! Likewise, why is there sometimes a random sock, pair of trousers, etc on the pavements?

x2boys · 08/08/2022 18:57

My son has severe autism and learning disabilities, when we got home from visiting my parents once day we couldn't find his shoes anywhere and can only put it down ti him throwing them out the car window🤷‍♀️

Tara336 · 08/08/2022 19:03

Not on a motorway but yes I have lost a shoe on a road, I dont really know how it happened but I had been on a night out, threw my shoes in the boot of the car before we drove home and the next morning went to retrieve them and there was only one shoe, later in the day I drove to collect my DD and saw my shoe laying on the duel carriageway

ladydimitrescu · 08/08/2022 19:08

My DS threw one out the window as a toddler in a fit of rage over not seeing the cows I'd pointed out to him.

FourChimneys · 08/08/2022 19:08

Maybe they fall out of broken down cars when the owners get out?

I saw a teddy on the motorway once, that was sad. I imagined a crying child and no way of retrieving the teddy 😢

My partner once left Ds's shoes on the car roof at a service station and drove off. They weren't there when we got to our destination. He only remembered what he had done when we couldn't find his shoes.

ItsDangerousInKingsmarkham · 08/08/2022 19:17

Once I was involved in a crash, I was hit from behind on the motorway and the contents of my boot were strewn across the carriageways. Unfortunately I was a student going home from halls so it was a LOT. I lost quite a few pairs of shoes amongst other things. My favourite boots were run over and squashed flat by a fire engine.

Also, my dad once got to work and realised he'd put his work shoes on top of the car to get his coffee/laptop etc in safely and then just hopped in the car and driven off. There was one shoe near the end of his street for ages and the other halfway to his work, in a bush.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/08/2022 19:19

I have driven off with my work boots on the roof, after changing my shoes to drive home. I realised when the site manager (construction site) rang me up to tell me before I'd got very far.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 08/08/2022 19:24

We once followed the path of a car whose roof box was obviously leaking, for miles and miles.
ds once kicked his shoe off on the ferry to France.Over the side. We watched it float away.

RishiRich · 08/08/2022 19:26

Toddler DD threw her shoes out of the moving car window once. That was annoying.

It's doidn't you know?

The society for putting broken bedsteads into ponds
Has another solemn purpose to fulfil.
For our coastal sands and beaches,
All where waving willow wands,
Mark the borders of a river, stream or rill.

You will always find a single laceless, left-hand leather boot.
A bootless British river bank's a shock.
We leave them there at midnight, you can track a member's route,
By the alternating prints of boot and sock.

knickersniff · 08/08/2022 19:46

We call them vomit shoes 🤣

Swimminginmud · 08/08/2022 19:57

My husband once drove off with his brand new custom Jordan’s on the roof. That was 16 years ago. He’s still upset about it.

LouLou198 · 08/08/2022 20:08

I saw a single adult size sandal on the path at Center Parcs last week. Got me wondering who had walked back to their lodge with only 1 sandal??! Grin

hewouldwouldnthe · 08/08/2022 20:09

Its in the same category as everyone who owns a house having a handful of loose bricks somewhere in the garden.

petshopboys · 08/08/2022 20:13

A leopard print shoe appeared on a road roughly around the time Theresa May resigned and we said it must've been hers and then began using it as a reference point when giving directions 😂"How do you get to so-and-so's house?" "Keep going past Theresa May's shoe and then turn left"

travailtotravel · 08/08/2022 20:16

I make up stories about them ...

ShinyPikachu · 08/08/2022 20:19

I still don't know what happened to a pair of my shoes after one very drunken night. They were slip on ones and I had blisters on my feet the next day but I've never found the shoes. I can only guess that I took them off because of the blisters and decided I didn't want them any more.

They were probably dogging.

My grandmother brought her "good" shoes to change into, her handbag and a Contigo mug of coffee with her.
She placed the "good" shoes on the roof of her car as she sorted herself out getting in to the car.

Yep, she drove off with the shoes on the roof. 🙄
My mother spotted one of them not far from gran's home. On the dual carriageway. Smile
