Have you ever lost a shoe on a motorway?

Just wondering, as every motorway seems to have a random shoe on the hard shoulder every few miles. Do people throw them out the window during family arguments? Are they lying on the back seat with their feet up on the open window? I can't help thinking that every shoe must have an interesting backstory.

Aww now every time I see a shoe I'm going to think someone had a car crash had to be cut out of their car possibly minus their foot and that is why there are shoes everywhere, they should all be collected and put by the side of the road as a memorial and a warning to drive carefully (or keep windows closed with tantruming toddlers in the car) so what do trainers hanging on telegraph poles/wires mean then? I thought that just meant bullies nicked someones pe shoes and threw them in the air for a laugh and they got stuck there!

I've seen an exhibition exactly like this. 🥹 Big pile of shoes in a city centre - explaining how shoes fly off in high impact accidents. The number of shoes was the number of children killed on the roads that year. It was quite harrowing.

Yes unfortunately they are often due to high impact accidents. I found that out after seeing the aftermath of one once, and someone at the scene explained it to me.

Not nice 😞

Not a motorway but I was behind a cyclist (as a passenger) going along a road the other day and their bag was open and shoes fell out. We tried to shout and tell them as we overtook (with loads of space) but just got a really aggressive "Fuck off" from the other cyclist they were with. Made me feel so good about my attempt to help

Back in the day when we were going on holiday we would park in a lay by to have our warm limp ham sandwiches. I wore jelly shoes (anyone remember them? I also had a jelly bag) but because our car was so packed full and we didn’t have to wear seatbelts in the back my sister and I would stretch across the back seat and snuggle under our duvets so we would take off our shoes. I forgot to put my jelly shoes in the car after taking them off and left them in the lay by. My dad was furious!

Often see a single shoe on a roundabout and wonder how it got there!

For anyone going on the chairlift at Alum Bay this summer, you can play 'count the flip flops' underneath it.

Gosh I hadn't thought of this . I always thought it was random blokes hilariously chucking their shoes out of the window. Feel sombre now

I used to work in a motorway maintenance depot and the guys used to find all kinds of things on the side of the road. Quite a few bicycles, lots of cats and dogs which they have to bag up and try and reunite with their owners.

I once saw a small teddy with a jumper that said 'will you marry me?' I assume the answer was 'No'.

Yes, my friend's brother was killed by a car on the main road near our house and his shoe was at the side of the road for ages afterwards.

Hop27 · 09/08/2022 13:09

Sadly they are left from accidents. Confirmed by my medic DS.

starfishmummy · 09/08/2022 13:13

I was once in someone else's car on the way to a holiday - when the boot hadn't been closed properly and flew open. How half our luggage didn't end up strewn all over the road (fast dual carriageway) I have no idea.

RealDeeBliss · 09/08/2022 13:19

I think foxes take them from people's back doors and then discard them in weird locations i.e motorways

thereisonlyoneofme · 09/08/2022 16:12

We always thought it was lost shoes that had been tied behind a honeymoon couples car ! Do people still do that

kimfox · 09/08/2022 16:40

My son lost a jumper out of a friends roof box on the way to a cricket match with all the kit for several Dc crammed in. I found it about 3 months later and drove back to get it! Sun faded patchily and with a hole but still wearable!

QuebecBagnet · 09/08/2022 16:42

I saw someone on a French motorway lose the entire content of their roof box over a few miles. They were oblivious despite people waving and flashing. Clothes, ski boots, ski jackets, etc were all coming out. I bet someone was in trouble when they realised!

liveforsummer · 09/08/2022 16:49

I don't know but it's not just motorways. There was one on the verge of the bike path next to my house this morning so no car roof explanation to be had there. Did someone just walk home with one shoe? If so why? 🤷🏼‍♀️😆

Really? I drive hundreds of miles a week on a motorway and don't notice this! 🤣🤣

You will now 😆

My friend lost a shoe on a bridge over the Clyde so if you see a random sandal in Greenock then it could be hers
