Watching the early years when Carol is pregnant. I absolutely loathe Susan, she's vile. Splits up a family, feels entitled enough to give a baby she's not related to her OWN surname and constantly insults poor Ross with "sperm donor" comments. How did he not smash her face in? I know it's not real.

Rachel is the prettiest and wears amazing clothes, but Monica in the first couple of series is really beautiful. Also - mature Richard was much better for her than man baby Chandler.

Janice has a heart of gold and is actually pretty wise. She's a good friend to have.

Hate to say it but Joey is a loser. Freeloading off Chandler, barely works and treats women like shit. If he was real he would be hated on here.

If I could I would have ended it as:

Monica and Richard - who now wants kids with her (yeah I know he's old but he's just so bloody great).
Chandler and Kathy, who returns towards the end. In my version she never cheated on him, just had to move away for work.
Ross and Rachel - I know everyone on here hates him but although he was clingy at the beginning he chilled out a lot over time.
Phoebe and David. Never took to Mike.
Joey - happy to remain a serial shagger... but he could have at least scored a hit show role or something.

And there you go!

A random woman should have turned up with joeys kid after one of his flings and he would be forced to grow up .

Figgygal · 07/08/2022 20:18

Ross was the best character
All the best episodes and moments were around him (except phoebe's wedding to mike where even then he has the family dog)

ItWasJustifiedHeWasACunt · 07/08/2022 20:20

No Chandler referred to her as a "slutty nurse" and she replied she was actually a nurse.

Agree on the Joey thing - he was so unbelievably stupid towards the end it just wasn't normal.

Ross has the best one liners and is easily the funniest out of them all. The scene where he rocks up with his leather pants in his hands covered in paste and the "I'm an eight!" thing was hilarious. Don't get me started on the home video camera catching him with his afro! I was crying!

Also I know I'm being a fun sponge but in real life there is no way Phoebe or Joey could have afforded to live in Manhattan!

Mr Kotter! I had to Google what that was in reference too!.

TeddyTed · 07/08/2022 20:24

I don’t really get the Mike-hate, I liked David but Mike was a great new character and I thought a good fit for Phoebe (And obvs, Paul Rudd…)

none of them could really, with the size of their apartments

ItWasJustifiedHeWasACunt · 07/08/2022 20:27

I'd assume Ross could have done. He was probably the highest earner followed by Chandler. Of course Rachel and Monica ended up in really good careers too but both struggled for years first.

I read that in the original storyline Phoebe and David were going to marry and Paul Rudd ( Mike) was brought in as a bit of a diversion. He was so popular ( because he is the most handsome man in the world, ever) that the storyline was changed to make Mike and Phoebe marry and poor David got sidelined.

Phoebe was always my favourite, especially her early hippy dippy character.

CaptainCreepsBourgeMobile · 07/08/2022 20:31

You wonder how any of them had any money at all. None of them spent a lot of time working. Chefs work long hours, yet Monica was never bloody working.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 07/08/2022 20:32

i think she meant her costume was ‘just a nurse’ and not a slutty nurse.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 07/08/2022 20:33

Rachel and Monica apartment is explained by the illegal sublet. Joey mooches off Chandler. Phoebe lives with her grandmother and then inherits the apartment.

And apparently Monica,s apartment was rent controlled ,as was Carrie Bradshaw,s , in sex in the city ,to explain how they could afford it .

gotagooddeal · 07/08/2022 20:37

I love reading through all these opinions. None of my people like friends so I've can't talk to anyone about it

Is anyone else as much a fan as I am?! By fan I mean having FRIENDS loungewear, plates, duvet covers, make up bag, pens and phone case, can recite a lot of the script? I also went to the FRIENDSFEST in December 🤦🏽‍♀️🤣

This may be why I'm 41 and single 🤣

Ameanstreakamilewide · 07/08/2022 20:37

Monica was illegally sub-letting her Grandmother's apartment.
That's how she affords it.

Could many of them to be fair? Chandler probably and maybe Monica as she has her grandma’s rent controlled apartment but Rachel is a waitress who apparently had no support. Another thing - she worked her way up in fashion very quickly considering she basically seemed to just suddenly be in a really high up job.

Lampshaded a little bit when Joey comments ‘maybe because you’re all hanging around here at 2pm on a Wednesday’ when they’re complaining their bosses hate them.

But yeah they do like no work, do they? Surely Ross as a paleontologist would be working quite long hours and also doing academic works. Especially when he’s alter a uni lecturer too.

LadyApplejack · 07/08/2022 20:41

Oooh I agree with a lot of what you say re Janice, Carol and Susan. Also didn't like Chandler with Monica - he became totally wet and she was like an OCD military general.

Ross and Rachel all the way but the ending was incredibly rushed and poor (she was merrily getting on that plane no sweat until he turned up!)

Joey's stupidity is taken to extremes, but he's easily the most likeable character. The group wouldn't like Phoebe, she's weird and bitchy. Her wedding episode was awful.

Monica definitely prettier than Rachel! The sibling relationship with Ross is done brilliantly. Courtney Cox has brilliant rhythm, her dancing in those fat suits is fantastic.

My final personal opinion - I HATE neurotic Ross! The one who stresses about a sandwich and keeps saying "I'm fine" etc. Soo annoying. He's way better when he's witty, rinsing the male nanny and winding Monica/Rachel up. FINE BY ME!

Haha yes! Joey made a comment one time about sitting around drinking coffee at 11am then they all jumped up and went to work - probably 2 hours into the working day. Must have really chilled out employers!

It's just this second occurred to me (currently watching the Marcel episodes)... is it fair to say most of the apartment scenes are in the evening time after work? This has never occurred to me before now!

OP posts:
Kanaloa · 07/08/2022 20:46

Yes probably a lot of them are supposed to be after work. And maybe other episodes are supposed to be at the weekends?

Does anyone else think it’s odd they’re so often all free at the same time though? Wouldn’t a chef at a posh restaurant in NYC often work evening times/unsociable hours? Yet Monica is always free at the same times as Chandler, who is an office worker, or Ross who works at a museum.

itssquidstella · 07/08/2022 20:46

@ItWasJustifiedHeWasACunt I think in the first series most of the show takes place 'after work' (although as a chef, you'd assume Monica would be working during the evenings!). As the show evolved and became more popular I think they made fewer efforts to keep it realistic; when it was conceived I do think it was meant to be at least a semi-realistic portrayal of 20-something life in New York, but it became a victim of its own success on that front.

Sorry, but no! She wasn’t a nurse! It was just a Halloween costume.

Joey suggests all these slutty costumes she could go as (Leatherface! No, no - slutty Leatherface), and so then when she turns up as a regular nurse (again, in costume for Halloween) and Joey makes the comment about ‘slutty nurse’, she corrects him.

It’s still just a costume - she works at Monica’s restaurant, hence her invitation to their wedding.

itrytomakemyway · 07/08/2022 20:49

The episodes where Ross is dating his student Elizabeth make me cringe - he would have been fired for that. I did enjoy watching hm dance at Spring Break though!

Emily was a terrible introduction. There is not one likeable thing about her. I just feel uncomfortable watching the episodes she is in. I don't think there is any chmistry between her and the other actors.

I love Chandler and I think he and Monica are very good for each other. Both have huge insecurities and would be a good support for each other.

I agree that Janice is fab. They should have let her join the inner circle. I would also have loved to see more of Joey's family.

DawsonsUglyCryingFace · 07/08/2022 20:51

The inconsistencies annoy me too. Especially the episode where a big deal is made of the fact Phoebe has never been in a proper relationship before. She moved in with Gary the cop! Surely that’s serious?!

I unashamedly love Ross. He’s hilarious. His “this is Vikram!” On the voicemail at the end of the aforementioned episode will forever be funny.

Kanaloa · 07/08/2022 20:52

Oh yes you definitely don’t see enough of Joey’s family. Especially his billion sisters all called Mary Angela/Mary Therese/Mary Josephine etc etc. None of them (excluding Ross & Monica) seem to see much of their family though do they? Rachel has two sisters but outside of their guest apparences they’re rarely mentioned at all. And Phoebe doesn’t mention Frank and her triplet nieces & nephew too much after that storyline is over.
