What days would you work?

I'll be increasing my hours at work and going from 3 days to 4 days. I currently work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 7am to 5pm combination of office and gone working. I have the opportunity to change my days if I want but I'm not sure what would be the best fit.

I like the ideas of Fridays off but Fridays are also a nice day in the office, fuddle day and early finish. I also like the thought of a Monday off for a long weekend. A friend suggested Wednesdays off but I'm not sure I'd like the feeling of Wednesday night blues each week and would rather do it all in one.

What do others do and what do you enjoy?

Sorry should say I have two kids both who will be on full time school in September so the 5th day off would be catch up day with washing/chores/appointments etc.

If you have a Monday off you don't need to use so much leave on bank holidays.

carefullycourageous · 05/08/2022 18:20

I like a split week, never get tired. So I'd have Tuesday or Wednesday off. Tuesday off is lovely after a bank holiday!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 05/08/2022 18:20

Take Friday off if Mondays are generally more productive otherwise you'll always feel on the back foot every Tuesday morning and it's not a good feeling.

dementedpixie · 05/08/2022 18:20

If you have kids in school then having a Monday off would also help as schools would be off too on a bank holiday

Notoironing · 05/08/2022 18:21

I have Mondays off which I like. It means I can have a glass of wine on Sunday nights and do t have to spend time on Sundays getting myself ready for work as well as all the DC ready for their Mondays too.

EmmaStone · 05/08/2022 18:36

Fridays are nice off - long weekend, and IME other PT friends are also off on a Friday.

Mondays are great in terms of BH allowances, but not always great for business purposes.

I'm currently having Wednesdays off, I'm not sure how I feel about it - I can get a lot of life admin done, but I don't really feel the benefit of a rest.

If anything is available, I'd go for Mondays for the holiday bonus.

Twospaniels · 05/08/2022 19:12

Mondays are a good day. As someone else said you don’t have to use your annual leave for the bank holidays.

MrsMontyD · 05/08/2022 19:19

Wednesdays seem to be very popular where I work because it splits the week and you only ever work two days together.

InTheShadeOfTheFigTree · 05/08/2022 19:22

Always Mondays. That means that you use less leave up on bank holidays so in effect you can take some of them when you choose instead. I hated having a Wednesday off, it felt like starting a new week twice a week.

JustLyra · 05/08/2022 19:22

In terms of leave for bank holidays (if your workplaces closes) Monday is the best day to take off.

tokyotea · 05/08/2022 19:41

I've opted to have Mondays off. It's a long weekend that way and if we want to travel for a few days I just need to add another day on possibly to make it 4. Also DHs childcare is closed on bank hols which we still have to pay for so I prefer to be home with him, so he can go another day instead. I wouldn't like to have Wednesday off, I don't think. Would feel like starting the week again on a Thursday I think. I've had Fridays off before which was nice again, for the long weekend, but we have earlier finishes on Friday so I prefer to work it.

tokyotea · 05/08/2022 19:43

DCs childcare, not DH Grin

tickticksnooze · 05/08/2022 20:00

Your holiday entitlement will be pro-rated to account for the impact of your NWD on bank holidays, so you end up with the same amount of time off regardless of which day you pick.

HardStareBear · 05/08/2022 20:07

I LOVE my Wednesdays off. I only ever work two days in a row and it's brilliant.

feeona123 · 05/08/2022 20:12

I do 4 days and have Wednesday off. I quite like it as it breaks up the week.

BakewellGin1 · 05/08/2022 20:13

In my role i would probably go for a Wednesday or a Friday. Mondays are chaos and i would have to play catch up all week.

TheOGCCL · 05/08/2022 20:15

I also do four days and have Wednesdays off. As PP said I never have to work more than two days in a row. I don't dread work though so Wednesday night is fine for me.

Kidsandcat · 05/08/2022 20:19

Probably Friday, nice long weekend and time to forget about work before going back. Other days seem to cause issues with missing meetings etc and you might end up swapping days all the time to accommodate.

Haribosweets · 05/08/2022 20:23

I would have Mondays due to the Bank Holiday entitlement. You will be given more leave than if you worked a Monday. Also, as you say Fridays are a good day in the office, people are more chirpy, looking forward to weekends, more relaxed atmosphere

bippityboppity87 · 05/08/2022 20:55

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Makes for a long weekend. Or Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Also, having Mondays off, means you don't have to worry about bank holidays. But those are the two options I'd be gravitate to. Possibly more the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday option

You would get the same entitlement but less choice about when to use the entitlement if you work a Monday as you would have to use days to cover the bank holidays. If you don't work a Monday you can use the days off at another time

bippityboppity87 · 05/08/2022 20:58

Sorry, just seen it's 4 days you'll be working! I need to read more carefully Blush in that case, I would work Tuesday-Friday. Some people like a midweek day off, but I never liked that personally. I always ended up wasting the day

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 05/08/2022 20:59

Wednesday off because if you are ill you can usually manage 2 days at work without having to go off sick.

danadas · 05/08/2022 20:59

When I was part time, I had Mondays off and loved it. Never worked more than two days on the trot and it felt like a day off rather than an extension of the weekend - two breaks in a week instead of 1
