What days would you work?

I'll be increasing my hours at work and going from 3 days to 4 days. I currently work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 7am to 5pm combination of office and gone working. I have the opportunity to change my days if I want but I'm not sure what would be the best fit.

I like the ideas of Fridays off but Fridays are also a nice day in the office, fuddle day and early finish. I also like the thought of a Monday off for a long weekend. A friend suggested Wednesdays off but I'm not sure I'd like the feeling of Wednesday night blues each week and would rather do it all in one.

What do others do and what do you enjoy?

Wednesdays that should have said...!

Watapalava · 05/08/2022 21:01

Take Monday

if you work 3 days you are entitled to 3/5 or all the bank holiday so if your days inc a Monday you have to use your leave to cover any other bank holidays

if you don’t work Monday you are still entitled to 3/5 bank holidays and you will use far less

therefore you gain about a weeks annual leave not working Monday

Mondays off. Friday is a better day to catch up on outstanding tasks before the weekend and helps when kids go back to school as they normally start Tuesday/Weds the first week back

Heathofhares · 05/08/2022 21:02

I like having Mondays off so. Can really relax at the weekend. I get that Friday feeling and can shut off with everyone else. I then have the Monday to hear myself up for work. I have quite a stressful job and I was finding I was fretting away the whole of Sunday Now I know I have several child free hours on a Monday when I can sort myself out and prepare for the week.

I used to have a Thursday off. I found it nice to work 3 days and then have a break and then only one day till the weekend. Friday was always a nicer day at work because everyone had the end of the week vibes. My youngest used to have a day off childcare on a Thurs and it seemed to work really well for him too as he had more energy for the weekend.

I did not like having Mondays as my day off. When I arrived on the Tuesday everyone was over the back to work blues which I then had! Also you don't get to look forward to bank holidays.

Take Mondays off, just for the using less holiday entitlement for bank holidays if nothing else!

Undecidedandtorn · 05/08/2022 21:49

I found when I worked 4 days and had Fridays off Thursdays were really stressful as people didn't want to wait till Monday for stuff. Having Wednesday off was much better as on Tuesday people didn't mind waiting for stuff to happen if it was going to get sorted on the Thursday

You would get the same entitlement but less choice about when to use the entitlement if you work a Monday as you would have to use days to cover the bank holidays. If you don't work a Monday you can use the days off at another time

That's exactly it. You get to pick when to take at least 4 BHs every year.

bluechameleon · 05/08/2022 23:55

I've done Mondays and Wednesdays at different times and liked both. Mondays gives the chance for a long weekend, and it is nice on a Sunday night to know you have another day. But I sometimes felt on the back foot missing the start of the week.
Wednesdays is good because you never do more than 2 days in a row so never get too tired or fed up. Also you are there for the start and end of the week so don't feel like you miss so much. But no long weekends. I'm a teacher so bank holidays are not really relevant.

Craftybodger · 06/08/2022 00:12

Wednesdays, you only have to get to the end of tomorrow to get time at home.

Algbu6 · 06/08/2022 02:38

Monday. I like a mid week day off though it breaks the week up. Fridays are overrated

balalake · 06/08/2022 08:33

I do four days a week Tuesday to Friday. Suits me when travelling to family to come back on a Monday and not have weekend engineering works to contend with. Also find that there is little or no attempt to try to persuade me to make an exception and swap my non-working day- no 'urgent' (because of lack of planning) issues seem to crop up on Mondays.

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 06/08/2022 08:37

If you have DC definitely a Monday just as others have said for BH allowance. Ah I'd loove to be 4 days a week/ have Mondays off again, it was lush.

grafittiartist · 06/08/2022 08:49

I do 4 days. I love having a midweek day off- breaks up the week.
If it had to be the ends- I'd go for Monday- it would be lovely having a Sunday night without Monday morning looming.

Oblomov22 · 06/08/2022 08:54

Anyone who is anyone who knows about part time working always suggests taking Mondays - it's an absolute given as the best day.

But if not you then either take Friday as a long weekend (many places less work is done on a Friday afternoon, so this actually isn't the best choice for you as an employee). Or Wednesday, mid week to break it up.

GrumpySausage · 07/08/2022 22:26

Thanks everyone! Strongly leaning towards Monday now. Will put in my change of hours application tomorrow. 👍🏻
