Is bloody hell swearing?

I think it's a soft swear word but DH says it's not swearing at all.

Just wondering what the majority think?

(I'm not comparing with other swear words fyi)

Yes.

IDrinkCoffee · 05/08/2022 12:40

Would he say in front of a vicar or a priest? If the answer is 'no', then it's swearing 😂

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 05/08/2022 12:43

Well there's definitely worse swearing but it's still swearing and I wouldn't find it acceptable coming from a child (also wouldn't say it in front of a child).

Spanielsarepainless · 05/08/2022 12:44

Yes, it is swearing. Bloody is a contraction of By Our Lady.

southlondonerhere · 05/08/2022 14:28

My grandma thinks it's a swear word, I don't think it is though!

But it is, historically. You thinking otherwise doesn't make it so.

Mild. I got reprimanded at school for saying I was knackered. Never knew that was so offensive to some people 😂. I was literally mind blown at the time.

Wtf hahaha

southlondonerhere · 05/08/2022 14:34

I remember my sister once telling ME to shut up and my dad telling me off saying he never wanted me to hear that language from me again 🤣🤣🤣

DuesToTheDirt · 05/08/2022 14:34

Of course it's swearing.

southlondonerhere · 05/08/2022 14:40

@Johnnysgirl before 1750 it wasn't a swear word at all, then it became one, words evolve

It's swearing 😂
It's become far less offensive, certainly, but then "fuck" is relatively inoffensive to most people these days (in a non agressive context, anyway); it hasn't and won't ever evolve out of being a swear word.

Wtf hahaha

I remember our primary school French teacher telling someone off for saying ‘shut up’ and that was 1979. I accept her swear radar may have been oversensitive though 😂. Back in those days they still taught ‘Zut alors’ as a sort of expletive in French text books and I think that’s the French equivalent of ‘By Jove’ or ‘Blast and botheration’.

ThomasinaGallico · 05/08/2022 15:58

I think ‘crap’ seems to have moved up the swear scale in my lifetime. I remember when that was a very mild colloquialism for rubbish.

Shut up is an aggressive thing to say, rather than an outrageous swear word. It's actually quite unpleasant.

orangeisthenewpuce · 05/08/2022 16:01

Yes. I wouldn't say it in front of children.

nervynancy · 05/08/2022 17:08

If you wouldn't use it in an interview setting, then imo it is.

upinaballoon · 05/08/2022 18:46

Johnnysgirl · 05/08/2022 11:44

It is, yes. It's not regarded as offensive any more, but it's still swearing.

Are you perfectly sure that it isn't regarded as offensive by some people?

Sorry, no of course not. I was clumsily making the point that just because most people considered it relatively mild; it hadn't "evolved" from being a swear word.
Or blasphemy.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/08/2022 22:16

I honestly don't know anyone who wouldn't regard it as a swear word.

kewwii · 06/02/2025 14:28

i don't think it swearing but the school thinks it do i said it in school and they said it is so i'm i in the worry😕

howshouldibehave · 06/02/2025 15:35

I'd say it was swearing. Would your husband be happy if his children's teacher said it to them?

Snog · 06/02/2025 20:51

Definitely swearing.

There are worse things you can say of course but I wouldn't class this as "mild swearing" more mid-range.
