Is bloody hell swearing?

Namechangeforthisonenow · 04/08/2022 20:15

I think it's a soft swear word but DH says it's not swearing at all.

Just wondering what the majority think?

(I'm not comparing with other swear words fyi)

I think it's soft swearing too.

It's definitely a form of swearing.

hugoagogo · 04/08/2022 22:15

What about fart?
As a child I was told 'shut up!' was swearingGrin

TailSpinner · 04/08/2022 22:16

My parents use to say it was a swear word… until Harry Potter at which point it wasn’t lol

It’s not really in the books though is it? I think it’s a film thing. I always think they did that because it’s what American’s expect British people, including children, to speak like - the screen writer is American.
I definitely don’t expect young kids to say it in real life. If a teacher can’t say it in front of their class - and I really don’t think they would say ‘bloody hell’ in front of their class - then it’s not appropriate for kids to say either in my opinion. Whether that makes it a ‘swear word’ I’m not sure.

Mild. I got reprimanded at school for saying I was knackered. Never knew that was so offensive to some people 😂. I was literally mind blown at the time.

Thejoyfulstar · 04/08/2022 22:17

Yes it is swearing. I dont swear and I don't say it. I'm a bit of a Ned Flanders and don't say much worse than 'gosh' or 'goodness'.

MaxOverTheMoon · 04/08/2022 22:18

It's a swear word you can say in front of your MIL but wouldn't let your dc say until teens IMO.

When I was married my ex let his son (aged 6/7/8) say it and it really didn't sit right with me and raised plenty of eyebrows when out and about. Exh didn't see a problem with it, different strokes for different folks I suppose but I would be surprised to learn that a teacher wouldn't reprimand a primary aged dc for saying it.

Dalaidramailama · 04/08/2022 22:19

My 10 year old daughter says it now and again. I used to pull her up for it but now I just cannot be arsed. Gathered I say it too much myself.

That is about as far as it goes. Words like fuck etc are most certainly not allowed.

stealthninjamum · 04/08/2022 22:20

I think it’s mild these days but I’m think I read somewhere that it caused an outrage in the 1960s when it was first used on TV.

Boating123 · 04/08/2022 22:23

Yes it is.

Snog · 04/08/2022 22:27

I'd say swearing but moderate not mild category

allboysherebutme · 04/08/2022 22:28

Yes. X

MissMaple82 · 04/08/2022 22:36

Well it was on a new kids movie I watched last week, along with "bollocksed" so 🤷

friendtodinosaurs · 04/08/2022 22:43

We call it a square word! Something they wouldn't say at school or in front of the queen but not quite a swear!

SummerSazz · 04/08/2022 22:44

I wouldn't say it in front of my MIL and wouldn't want the kids to either. My parents would have said it was blasphemy.

Also I don't allow 'shut up' in the house as I think it's incredibly rude to say it to someone.

I do happily swear on conversation with friends and (tame) work colleagues

willybumpoo · 04/08/2022 22:46

Yep I still automatically think of Ron in the early Harry Potter films 🤣

PlanetNormal · 04/08/2022 22:48

I don’t fucking think so.

KissMyElbow · 04/08/2022 22:51

I think it depends on your age 😂

I was told recently saying ‘that will piss people off’ was swearing 🤷🏻‍♀️

Romeiswheretheheartis · 04/08/2022 22:58

This has reminded me of when my dd was in infants, she came home asking why her classmates laughed every time she said 'bloody' - as in 'it was a bloody battle' (in their history topic). It was the first time I had to explain about swear words to her!

merryhouse · 04/08/2022 23:03

yes it's swearing. Combination of profanity and blasphemy, which is pretty good going Grin

(I've never believed the "by our lady" bullshit. The entire construction of the sentence is wrong for that to work. Also I think (though don't quote me on this I may have made it up out of whole cloth) that other languages have an equivalent.)

"Shut up" is slang, not swearing. It is rude though.

S2 when he was 15 seriously argued with me that "bitch" is swearing and "crap" is not - I suppose progress over 30 years has been positive.

They'd stopped thinking "stupid" was a swear word by then.

1982mommaof4 · 04/08/2022 23:04

I don't think it is at all, I vaguely remember my mum saying not to say it

reallyisthisallthereis · 04/08/2022 23:05

Bloody is !

1982mommaof4 · 04/08/2022 23:08

reallyisthisallthereis · 04/08/2022 23:05

Bloody is !

😅

FunsizedandFabulous · 04/08/2022 23:11

Not any more. My husband says far, far worse. I am into a little light cussing. Despite being surrounded by blue language, my daughter doesn't use it at all. Not even bloody.

WingBingo · 04/08/2022 21:05

I’ve always wondered if we could take the power out of swear words

not sure how though. Can’t see a casual cunt being thrown into everyday conversations.

Adult dd and I often use the word cunt but only when it's the 2 of us.
Dh & adult ds know that it's not a word that they should use, I feel very strongly that it shouldn't ever be uttered by a man!

Bloody hell has definitely been softened by Ron Weasley!

howshouldibehave · 04/08/2022 23:17

Hmmm, yes…I would say it was a swear word-I’m a teacher and I wouldn’t use it in front of my class of primary-aged children. I wouldn’t expect to hear any of them use it either.

I happily swear as much as possible when not at work though, I should add, and I would count ‘bloody hell’ as a very mild swear!
