Should I invest in high tog duvets?

I think they're just normal all year ones as we usually have the heating on but really not going to be able to.

Or will layers work better? More blankets?

Wool.

Invest in wool blankets or wool duvets.
Expensive but worth it.

You can get wool duvets cheapest through IKEA. Vintage wool blankets can be bought on eBay or just keep an eye on discount supplier pages, especially if you're not fussed by colour.

Top sheet, blanket, duvet is warmest. Choose brushed cotton for sheets.

My dc have got (hideous) blankets with wolves/snow leopards on that are a sort of fleecy fur type affair that are so heavy and warm that they can barely have them on their beds.

Wool always. Natural fibres keep you warm and your skin can breath. All these fleece type plastic blankets are not good for you and especially bad for babies. Wool is expensive but it is natural and a blanket will last for decades. We have wool duvets and they are amazing. We have a 4.5 tog duvet and I have a wool blanket and a homemade patchwork quilt on the bed. We are toasty and warm and we don’t have any heating in the bedrooms.

I just purchased the heated blankets. The dreamland ones. I'm hoping they will do the trick and help me reduce the time I have the heating on...

I’ve got mine merino wool thermals so they can be toasty in bed and chuck on a Oodie when they get out - worried they’ll struggle to get out of a cosy bed otherwise

Dd2 has a 10.5 tog quilt (that she is using now, and wearing socks - she likes to be snuggly!) and in winter she has a very large cellular blanket over and a vest under her pyjamas. I usually have the heating to come on twice overnight in their room, but this winter will try not to and will look for those brushed cotton sheets to go under the quilt like I had when I was little.

Might also get some fleece mattress toppers. We are not low earners; not high but should be very comfortable. It is worrying.

We have a couple of oodies. Might invest in more.

Get the Oodie rip offs from Primark when they are in stock, super warm and a fraction of the cost. The Amazon ones are warm but a lot thinner.

Bedroom athletics boot slippers are really warm too.

Bed wise, the Teddy duvet sets from dunelm, and I'd just buy a second normal duvet to go over the top if your children are fairly old.

What about the head though? I had a very warm woollen shawl that I used to wear in bed, and covering the neck and shoulders - this keeps you warmer. But if my nose and eyes get cold, then I am cold. What's the solution to keep the face warm?

A hot water bottle, bed socks plus any warmer tog duvet will be fine unless you live in Siberia.

I saved up for John Atkinson blankets but you need to shop about online for the discount ones. Just Google traditional wool bedblankets every so often and you'll pick up various hits.

If they're still too expensive (granted, I only had to save for blankets for myself and not multiple children) then I'd opt for 100% wool throws which you can layer the same way. They're smaller so you won't tuck them on but they'll still do the job.

Electric under blankets are also brilliant and cost effective.

What's the solution to keep the face warm?

wear a balaclava?
put a hot water bottle on your face?
buy a cat but factor in the cost of keeping it/it might not want to sleep on your face or to your schedule and then you just have an added expense?

Our dc sleep with the intelliheat heated blankets and love them - DS hastily needs his while dd has hers on high all night . It protects them from that awful cold dip that can come.
I don’t know yet what I’ll do to be sure baby is the right temperature too, apart from sleep v close!

Interesting wool so popular as we do have good experience too with just cheap fleece -DD who is permanently cold goes for layers which includes a fleece dressing gown in bed

Hope you don't mind me asking where do you get these please? They sound like what they use in the Middle East I've not been able to find one here?

We have a heavier cotton bedspread that goes on in the winter. It weighs the duvet down. All in ones when the children are young was something they loved

Brushed cotton sheets for winter, then either lots of layers or a 3 in 1 all season duvet.

@Unforgettablefire my Mum bought them but I'll ask her tomorrow and look to see if there are any labels on them.
