What type of blankets will keep the kids warm this winter?

Should I invest in high tog duvets?

I think they're just normal all year ones as we usually have the heating on but really not going to be able to.

Or will layers work better? More blankets?

Is it cheaper to boil water in a microwave instead of boiling a kettle, I wonder. Or to cook with a microwave instead of using an oven. I assume so…

I think a microwave must surely use more energy than a kettle.

Also it's a crime against tea to consider heating water in a microwave - give your head a wobble

No, because the RF transmission incurs losses. The water is being directly heated by an element in a kettle and in a smaller space to limit evaporation losses.

This is why wireless charging is inherently wasteful compared to charging a device by plugging a cable in.

La Redoute do this blanket if you feel the cold:

It's thick and very warm. There's always a code knocking about on the internet for 30% or more off.

My dad used to sleep under actual horse blankets.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 04/08/2022 14:49

I bought these blankets - one each - last winter and they are amazing. They’re 100% polyester/100% acrylic (not sure which side). Yes wool would I’m sure be preferable but I don’t have the £££ for that especially when cheaper options are just as good!

Sheets, 4 tog duvet, thin throws and then this blanket keeps me toasty.

I will consider electric blankets for the kids as well.

Oh shit, forgot the pic!

easy to wash and dry also.

Nothing is going to be warmer than pure wool and I hate those fleecy polyester things.

You can get ex military wool blankets fairly cheaply on eBay or try your local army surplus store. They are so toasty.

We dont have it on overnight either. But we do have a reasonably warm house in the evening which means the house (and we) are not already very cold when we go to bed and the house itself retains some of that heat.

Some people will struggle to heat their house in the evenings this winter and doing to bed already very cold is a completely different prospect.

Yes that's a fair enough point, I was picking up on the people that had said they have heating on overnight and not considering that some people won't even have had their heating on during the day either so apologies if my comment came across as insensitive. Hopefully some of my tips (and the other very helpful suggestions on this thread) will help someone.

Regarding electric blankets, are they safe? My parents always drummed into me that they were a fire risk but I've got no idea if that's true or they were just being over cautious. They're probably much safer nowadays anyway. Hot water bottles are a good, inexpensive alternative!

Electric blankets are very safe and cheaper to run than hot water bottles.
