So its my birthday in a week. Its a big one that ends in 0.

I want to do something spontaneous but I need some inspiration. I am thinking of rowing lessons as my Dad gave me some birthday money.

Signed up for an improv course which included a live show at the end. It was brilliant fun!

MrsMigginsCat · 30/07/2022 18:50

Bought a campervan. A very expensive spontaneous purchase, but we love it.

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 30/07/2022 18:51

Stayed on the bus past my stop instead of getting off and going to a job I hated. When I did get off I stuck my thumb out and got into the first car that stopped.

It actually worked out quite well, in the end.

With one weeks notice I flew to Santa Fe for a week. Fabulous.

ZarquonsSandals · 30/07/2022 18:56

Not birthday related but chucked my job in and went to Australia for 6 months. I'd never been on a plane, nor lived independently before then.

resipsa · 30/07/2022 19:07

Not really one for a birthday treat but moved in with a bloke I met in a cinema 10 days earlier. (Been married 21 years now 😉).

About 25 years ago now, when I was young, free and (relatively) single (DH and I were in the very early stages of dating) I got talking to a bunch of chatty Australians on the train back from uni, where I was doing a postgrad diploma, and ended up in a backpackers’ pub randomly chatting to loads of random people. It was good fun.😁

Flew to Hong Kong for a long weekend when my then boyfriend was being a cock to me. We’d been together four years and he wouldn’t invite me to his sister’s wedding. So I made sure I was doing something else. He called me two days before the wedding and said it was OK for me to go if I wanted to. I told him I had other plans.

Hellocatshome · 30/07/2022 19:48

Is it spontaneous if you plan it in advance? Most spontaneous thing I did was stand up and walk out of my job as I just couldn't bear to be there a moment longer. I shocked myself and cried all the way home but in the end it was the right thing to do

NeverHadANickname · 30/07/2022 19:51

Most of my piercings have been spontaneous last minute decisions. Woke up on the morning, thought I'd like to get a piercing, went and got it done that day. Highly recommend.

mrsbyers · 30/07/2022 19:52

Went for lunch from a job I hated and didn’t go back

knackeredagain · 30/07/2022 19:55

Can you plan spontaneity?

autocollantes · 30/07/2022 20:26

Yesterday I booked to go skydiving on Wednesday.

It was a spontaneous booking because I haven't been thinking about it, it just popped into my mind that I used to want to do it pre-kids. And I decided to just do it.

It's made me so happy.

Am planning on buying some incontinence pads though..cos I'm scared of heights! 😂

chipsandpeas · 30/07/2022 20:49

went to new york and booked the day before

KylieCharlene · 30/07/2022 20:53

Bought a dog
(I know, I know)

FunkyPhantom · 30/07/2022 20:54

Get up early and head to the nearest mainline train station. Look at the departures board and see what destination grabs you ......then get a return ticket. Just spend the day somewhere else with the locals and see what's about to do 😁👍

Ticktocktuck · 30/07/2022 20:56

Went to the airport with no ticket but plans to go somewhere warm for two weeks. And I did.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 30/07/2022 20:58

About 10yrs ago I sent a load of money to Kenya to a random bloke for a safari.
We already had a holiday booked but couldn't afford the travel company prices to add on the safari stays.
Just had a good feeling about it and did the bank transfer. All turned out to be real and not a con thankfully. It was a bit scary though when they took us into a really rough bit of town and into a back alley to meet the guy but he had a legit business down there 😄.

@Ticktocktuck I've always wanted to do that.

wonderstuff · 30/07/2022 20:59

Conception of my second child was quite spontaneous. Not really a big birthday kinda thing though..

travailtotravel · 30/07/2022 21:02

Just left work and hitched a ride with a stranger (in hindsight very lucky) who was driving across Europe. I just jumped off after a couple of days, and got the train back. I arrived back at about 8am, just in time to jump in the shower and be at work by 9. Things we're cheaper and more carefree in those days. I totally needed to do it.

The modern equivalent, and birthday appropriate might be to just get the eurostar and go to Paris for lunch?

Neverendingmindfuck · 30/07/2022 21:20

Most of my spontaneous decisions haven't gone so well..... much prefer planning ahead now 🤣
Unless there's an opportunity for skinny dipping obvs

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 30/07/2022 21:28

Last minute travel is v expensive though, especially trains. Unless you have a really big budget you'll end being spontaneous in bloody Doncaster.

lljkk · 30/07/2022 21:37

tbh, I instantly thought of all the cringe-worthy things I ever did or said. Not to be recommended.

FourChimneys · 30/07/2022 21:42

In my carefree 20s I would sometimes take an overnight bag to work on Fridays then instead of going home I would go to the railway station. Look to see what trains were going somewhere I'd never been and just go. Stayed at a youth hostel or walked round to find a b & b. Spent Saturday exploring then back on Sunday afternoon.

I know someone who went out to do a bit of grocery shopping and bought a boat instead. A four berth cabin cruiser, they used it for years.
