Mainly it's trying to get some idea what sort of topic it is - I think most of us can pick up cues for some categories now - and then think of what might fit the word lengths. I try not to enter words I'm reasonably sure of.
Yesterdays was a good example - I'd no idea what sort of thing it was until I found the 'opposite-{3 letter word} and {4 letter}-(3-letter}' part and later a couple of bits with a combination of a 2 and a 3 letter word. From which it seemed like it might be something with opposite-sex, same-sex, id and ego - and the word lengths were wrong for Freud or Freudian so I had to think what else could fit.
