Have you noticed...

... people from lower socio - economic backgrounds always tend to wear coats on really hot days or all summer?

I keep noticing it and just cannot stop. They also seem to dress their children in warm clothing too. Think trousers, coats and boots when it's 20° outside.

Biscuit

Have a biscuit, SE status of your choosing.

Brogues · 29/07/2022 16:24

Nope. Especially not skinny slightly sunburned underclass men with bare torsos and tracky bottoms tucked into socks. Balaclava and stolen motorcycle optional.

27x27 · 29/07/2022 16:26

@brownbreadicecream Yummy. Do you wear a coat in the summer and that's why you're getting all defensive? 🤣 I'm very poor too, I need a light summer jacket but I can't afford one so it's coat or nothing. I choose nothing.

You sound like a treasure! 🙄
I’m rich and I wear my coat in the Summer….. so what!

SpikeGilesSandwich · 29/07/2022 16:50

I have loads of jackets but my wealth keeps me warm so I don't bother wearing them.

Lightning020 · 29/07/2022 16:51

I feel the cold and every draught regardless of the outside temperature so I tend to wrap up all year round.

HTH.

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/07/2022 17:06

🙄

27x27 · 29/07/2022 17:16

So no one thinks wearing a winter coat in summer is a bit odd?

People with less money have fewer choices. It’s not rocket science.
We had school shoes we wore for everything, all year round - in sunshine or snow. The only other footwear we had was canvas pumps for PE, which got handed down between siblings. Dressing appropriately for the weather is a luxury.

Choice4567 · 29/07/2022 17:18

@SpikeGilesSandwich 😂

NoodleSnow · 29/07/2022 17:20

If you need pockets, or you think it might get chilly later on, or it looks like it might rain, you’d probably pick out a nice lightweight jacket. Fine if it’s in your wardrobe already, but buying a nice lightweight jacket instead of food would be a bad choice when you could just wear the coat you already have.

CuntAmongstThePigeons · 29/07/2022 17:46

It's definitely a thing. Particularly with teenagers. There's even a song about it. "Man's not hot"

Antarcticant · 29/07/2022 17:53

Perhaps if people less money to spend on clothes they are less likely to have different weights of coat for different seasons.

Having said that, I have never noticed this.

Blue4YOU · 29/07/2022 17:56

Slow news day?

dudsville · 29/07/2022 17:58

Of course they all do, it's towards the end of chapter 4 in the handbook.

TimBoothseyes · 29/07/2022 18:00

DP is on lifelong medication, a side effect being that he is constantly cold.

HTH

TimBoothseyes · 29/07/2022 18:01

Oh and for some of us 20-degrees isn't that warm anyway.

FatOaf · 29/07/2022 18:01

So no one thinks wearing a winter coat in summer is a bit odd

That wasn't the question you asked.

If you wanted answers to a certain question, why did you put a different question in your original post.

I presume I'm from a lower socio-economic background to you, given that I can't afford to be a full-time professional snob, but I wear shorts & a T-shirt on hot days.

exnewwifeproblems · 29/07/2022 18:02

When I was skint I had one coat.

That's why I wore it in the summer. Because I only had one.

Your point is?

TigerRag · 29/07/2022 18:04

Some of us have conditions that make us constantly cold.

And given the Great British weather, what on earth do you wear some days?

GreenWheat · 29/07/2022 18:08

Can't say as I've noticed this but then again maybe my cosy money blanket prevents me from noticing.

Sparklingbrook · 29/07/2022 18:08

No, I have not noticed anyone wearing a winter coat in the summer.

Catfordthefifth · 29/07/2022 18:15

Are you sure it was not just the weather was just a bit changeable today? I went out in my bloody winter coat because it was cold and wet this morning. When I went out at lunch I didn't realise it was warmer until I was out! I did think I probably looked a bit odd but I'm finding it funny someone watching me go get my lunch in my coat might have been wondering about how much money I have 🤣

This was me yesterday! Went out in a waterproof jacket because it was raining. By lunchtime we had sun.
