STOP HOGGING THE MIDDLE LANE!

Flowers217 · 26/07/2022 19:07

Seriously what is wrong with some drivers?!?

I was driving on the m4 this morning. It was pretty quiet and the section I was driving on now has 4 lanes.

Oh, but wait - 2 of them are empty because everybody just loves to drive in the third lane.

Yes it probably annoys me more than it does but my god it is so frustrating!!! and dangerous too!

Drivers are terrible for Kane discipline. Chugging along at 60 in the middle, causing tailbacks, inside Lane clear and empty.

4 lane motorways are the worst for it. And given that they have been extended to 4 lanes because they are the busiest stretches the impact is even worse.

SuperCamp · 26/07/2022 19:15

Er…. Lane discipline

balalake · 26/07/2022 19:16

I advocate that drivers who middle lane hog should be prosecuted, on the sole evidence of another driver's dash cam if needs be.

I'm sure the normal reticence to 'snitch' would not apply here.

katmarie · 26/07/2022 19:18

I drove about 300 miles on the motorway the last couple of days and literally was yelling at people to get fucking over. 10.30 at night, 3 lanes of motorway empty, why are you sitting in the middle. Doing 55. Fuck offfffff.

I feel better now.

JohnsShirt · 26/07/2022 19:18

I swear it's people who are scared of motorways, they are terrified to change lane, so sit in the middle and follow the car in front, doing the exact same thing and so on.

Barbequebeans64 · 26/07/2022 19:19

Gets on my tits, but sometimes I like to pretend the slow lane is my own personal VIP lane as no one else uses it

Thinkbiglittleone · 26/07/2022 19:22

This is sooo annoying, I do use the inside lane while staring at them or overtake them then slow down (gently) and indicate into the inside lane (psyco I know but it infuriates me)

VeniVidiWeeWee · 26/07/2022 19:43

Then pass them on the inside.

It's not a specific offence.

user1471505356 · 26/07/2022 19:53

Passing on the inside is also known as undertaking, might get you pulled over by traffic branch.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 26/07/2022 19:56

@user1471505356

Possibly.

But what's the offence?

Notanotherwindow · 26/07/2022 19:58

I undertake them revving as loudly and obnoxiously as possible which usually seems to wake them up and they move in behind me. It's people driving in a dream world and not paying attention.

HeddaGarbled · 26/07/2022 20:00

Someone was moaning about this a couple of days ago. Apparently they’re all electric cars 🤷‍♀️

Everyone is always droning on about this - it was quiet, there were 4 lanes, why not just get on with your life? Or go on Facebook to tell people not to walk their dogs on hot days.

Donotgogentle · 26/07/2022 20:01

Not as annoying as pootling along blocking the outside lane.

we need to legalise undertaking on motorways in the UK. It’s seen as too risky but I think it’s the lesser of two evils.

Mmmmdanone · 26/07/2022 20:01

Why not just overtake them in the overtaking lane?

lking679 · 26/07/2022 20:02

I pull up level so they know I’m there but don’t undertake. It’s actually a bit weird having someone drive next to you on the motorway! They normally speed up!

Donotgogentle · 26/07/2022 20:03

Undertaking can constitute careless driving:-

I think you can get 3 points on your licence for it now.

vdbfamily · 26/07/2022 20:06

Drives me absolutely meat and my kids who are all coming up to being drivers get very bored with me shouting at cars

KatherineJaneway · 26/07/2022 20:07

M4 is well known for this. At busy times you have so many lorries in the inside lane it is unusable for cars.

Lonelycrab · 26/07/2022 20:08

No, I don’t think so. The twats that make this a problem will probably be equally crap at checking mirrors before lane changing, and it would be more dangerous because of this.

JanuaryFebruaryMarch · 26/07/2022 20:11

Sooo irritating.

But also makes me feel scared at the lack of awareness of other drivers!

PerseverancePays · 26/07/2022 20:12

I drive in the middle lane. There, I said it.
I find the articulated lorries intimidating with their constant weaving in and out often with none or minimal indicating of their intentions. I overtake in the fast lane, and if there’s big gaps in the slow lane I’ll travel in that one.
if I’m in the middle lane driving along at 65, what’s to stop you overtaking in the fast lane, I don’t get what the fuss is. I don’t get why speedy drivers come screaming up behind me flashing their lights when there’s plenty of space in the fast lane to overtake .
if its busy then you’re driving along at the same speed as everyone else, looking out for the ‘weavers’ , thinking of the M25.
The slow lane is for trucks, the middle lane is for people observing the speed limit, the fast lane is mostly for people exceeding the speed limit, sometimes by a lot, and for overtaking the lorries when they are doing their own overtaking manoeuvres.
On my last trip down to Stanstead, I decided to drive at 55 to save on fuel, and it was very nice; I drove in the slow lane all the way and everyone went round me. I had loads of space in front of me and nobody hassled me at all.

That seems to the official view. Can’t help wondering if the problems caused by lane hogging are worse though.

The middle Lane is for overtaking the slow lane.

Thestoppedfan · 26/07/2022 20:19

Drives me insane! I’m sure people near us think lanes work the opposite way round. Hoggers in the middle and third lane going 60 and the first lane empty. They are only second to the idiots that stop in the middle of the motorway and indicate to join the standstill traffic that they should have joined two miles back.
