Somewhere safe to travel next summer with 2 DC

I'm strongly thinking of going abroad next summer as dh can't go. I have travelled alone a lot prior to DC (south America Spain etc )

I was thinking of northern Spain. I won't have a car with me. I can travel in June or early July. Can't really afford 2 or 3 grand.

Any suggestions and have a lovely weekend

How old are the children?

Hoolahulahoop · 24/07/2022 11:20

They will be 9 and 10 jubbly.
I would like somewhere near a beach but that's not essential. Happy to bus to places but mainly want somewhere safe. We would eat out about 6 or 7 and be home then for the evening.

I actually think cities could work either. They are well behaved quiet kids and easy going.

Where to start?!

loads and loads of places!

single parent here, similar ages, and well…. Provably best to avoid South America and South Africa if you’re concerned about safety for example.

but Europe, America, Australia… well, I could go on and on!

what is your budget?

Ohthatsexciting · 24/07/2022 11:24

Barcelona then
loads to do
and a beach

NuffSaidSam · 24/07/2022 11:24

Italy or Austria? Or one of the Scandinavian countries?

No sea beach in Austria, but can stay by a lake with a lake beach. Great for watersports, swimming etc.

Hoolahulahoop · 24/07/2022 11:31

Budget .. haven't really one in mind but I suppose I would allow 100 a night for a b&b ? Would like self catering either.
I've a year to save. Once it's clean and I feel safe. Back in the day I went to lake Garda and there was a lovely theme park bused it everywhere to Venice etc.

£100 should be ok

i paid £143 a night and it was central and absolutely beautiful

Ohthatsexciting · 24/07/2022 11:43

alth Ugh if you’re going in school holidays, £100 a night will get you something far out or central but grim

Nemesia · 24/07/2022 11:46

You could try Sitges, just down the coast from Barcelona and an easy train ride away. Not as hectic but still with enough to do.

Chewbecca · 24/07/2022 11:48

When we went to Northern Spain we found most restaurants didn’t open until 9pm!

How about Jersey?

Went to Malta with my dd in April it was gorgeous and very safe x
Then we went to Corfu in June which was amazing, I hired a villa with private pool from air B and B and it was the best holiday we've ever had! It was pricey at £1300 for the week but worth every penny.
Corfu is absolutely stunning and very safe too x
We always air B and B you can get some great accommodation

Netherlands? Some lovely cities on the coast (the beaches are lovely) and it’s the country of museums. So lots and lots to do. Either take the car or public transport is excellent or you can cycle! Eating early would suit you too.

AquaticSewingMachine · 24/07/2022 12:19

What do you mean by "safe"? Safe from what? Crime? Germs? Restrictive abortion laws?

KenAdams · 24/07/2022 12:26

Google BA holiday finder. This is coming up for mid June but those are adult prices so you might find it cheaper still. That will include baggage too.

Aquatic .. considering I'm going with two young children and be no other adult it's fairly obvious safe from crime. South America is out 😅 though it's lovely when your younger and naive

If your children enjoy museums, perhaps consider somewhere near to Amsterdam in the Netherlands (there are beach towns such as Zandvoort and places such as Leiden within a short distance).

RockandRollsuicide · 24/07/2022 13:03

Netherlands is amazing with children!

Lots and lots of options

Check out landals
De kempervenn.

Efteling (at least two nights)

Berkeley began, stay on site safari park, lots of different accmd offer.

Duinrell, slightly more Butlins theme but.. amazing water park, in pretty village, close to several breaches and about an hour from Amsterdam.
In Amsterdam obviously amazing musuems but the Nemo is a stand out for children (hands on science stuff and interactive with stunning roof terrace cafeteria)Anne Franks house.

And it's just beautiful. I absolutely adore Barcelona and have been twice but indefinitely felt safer on Amsterdam..

Netherlands is a fab country however be aware there are massive problem in alder airport (schipol) (bloody brexit) hopefully sorted by next year but I think euro star also goes to Amsterdam now?n

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 24/07/2022 13:04

Croatia is lovely with children at that age.

Hoolahulahoop · 24/07/2022 13:38

Love the Netherlands we've been a few times. Felt safe. Didn't think of the beach. That could work well.

Barcelona is great - city, massive parks, beach, great architecture.

yoshiblue · 24/07/2022 19:16

Would you consider getting the car ferry over to Belgium/Netherlands? You could stay at Center Parcs/Landal Park?

Or Netherlands may still be doable without a car, their train network is really good?

PSG · 24/07/2022 19:45

San Sebastián could be an option. I went with my daughter by train with a stop in Paris.
There are lovely beaches, food is good.

Nyancat · 24/07/2022 20:03

Another suggestion for duinrell, really easy without a car, maybe a few days in Amsterdam first then train/bus down. Hire bikes to cycle to the beach, theme park and waterpark onside. Small village on doorstep for nice meals and really safe feeling to walk home. Could do trips to the Hague etc.
