A conundrum- parking ticket

You've driven 3 friends to a concert and road diversions have made you really late and you're panicking you'll miss the beginning of the concert or worse they won't let you in at all .

Driving close to the venue your friend shouts they've seen a car space in a street to park up and you leg it to the venue .

After the concert you get back to the car to find a parking ticket .

Is it the driver who stumps up the full cost as they are legally responsible for parking correctly or should it be split between all of you as it was a passenger who shouted out the space and all friends benefitted by not missing the beginning of the concert .

I'd expect it split 3 ways. Treat it like paying for parking.

Driver. You didn't have to stop and it's your responsibility to check parking signs.

Driver as it's their responsibility to park legally and check signage. If I was one of the friends in the car I'd probably offer to split it, but if I was the driver I wouldn't ask them if they didn't offer.

The driver is responsible for ensuring the car is legally parked, so it is down to them to pay. If I was a passenger though I would probably offer to split.

Morally the parking fine should be divided between those in the car. If I'd noticed the space I would have felt obliged to offer to pay.

Personally I think it should be divided between everyone though when it happened to me my friend said just don’t pay it and absolved all responsibility for it.

Yes. The OP did say the other 3 were friends, what sort of friend wouldn't pay their share and expect the person who'd been kind enough to drive to pay it all?

If I were the driver, I'd not ask the others for money as it is my responsibility. But if I were a passenger I'd offer to split it.

if it was a speeding fine it would be the driver.

But with a parking space, in this particular situation, everyone in the car had equal opportunity to see the parking restrictions (even if the driver is legally responsible), and you were all in a hurry. I bet if you’d seen the parking restrictions you’d have all taken the risk anyway rather than miss the start.

If I was the driver I dont think id ask my friends to split it but if I was a passenger I would 100% split it and ask the other passengers split it too!
The driver has done a favour by driving in the first place

The driver is the only one with actual legal and moral responsibility for this but if the friends are real friends they will want to pay their share and wouldn't begrudge it for a moment, so if the driver ends up paying it all they will know who really isn't their friend.
