A conundrum- parking ticket

You've driven 3 friends to a concert and road diversions have made you really late and you're panicking you'll miss the beginning of the concert or worse they won't let you in at all .

Driving close to the venue your friend shouts they've seen a car space in a street to park up and you leg it to the venue .

After the concert you get back to the car to find a parking ticket .

Is it the driver who stumps up the full cost as they are legally responsible for parking correctly or should it be split between all of you as it was a passenger who shouted out the space and all friends benefitted by not missing the beginning of the concert .

split between the 3 of you.

I got a speeding ticket in Australia. Long, straight, wide road with 80k (50m) limit. The cop car was coming towards us and zapped us from the front. both passengers admitted/boasted they would have been driving faster than me. (60mph). and were happy to contribute a third each. (no points or anything as it was a hire car in a different country)

It's the driver's responsibility but if they are actually friends surely they'd offer to chip in

legally it is the driver, but the friends should offer to split it - they all benefited from the parking and could all have noticed the error.

Split it

RewildingAmbridge · 23/07/2022 23:18

Legally it's the driver's problem, but friends should offer to split it, once divided by four it's not such a bother, just a slight extra charge for not being late to the concert, whereas an extra £40/£50 for one person is more of an impact. I'd offer any friend of mine in a heartbeat.

The driver is the only one with actual legal and moral responsibility for this

Disagree, driver is legally responsible, everyone in the car is morally responsible.

I'd split if my friend was driving me

SuperCamp · 23/07/2022 23:40

If I was a passenger I would insist on sharing the cost.

SuperCamp · 23/07/2022 23:43

Don’t ever give them a lift again, OP!

drinkallthecoffee · 23/07/2022 23:47

I think it should be split but if I was the driver I'd feel a bit awkward asking my friends to split it. However if I was a passenger I'd offer something towards it.

Doyoumind · 23/07/2022 23:53

Definitely split between all. I honestly can't believe people are saying the driver has to pay. They were generous enough to be the one to drive. Why would they have to pay it all? If I were a pasenger I wouldn't expect the driver to pay it all.

PortalooSunset · 23/07/2022 23:54

Technically driver's responsibility however if the others are decent people it will be split.

Thanks for your thought everyone .
As an update I paid the ticket .
Everyone said we'd share the cost but of course the night ended , the ticket remained in the car and so it felt churlish to ask for money after the event .
