Low dose antidepressant for migraine?

Footballmatchdilemma · 21/07/2022 16:10

Has anyone got any experience with this? After trying everything I can think of (various treatments from GP, supplements, osteopath, acupuncture, mri to rule out tumour) I’m at my wits end.

So I’m wondering about asking for a low dose antidepressant. Maybe the headaches are down to anxiety/stress. Any help welcome!

Have you tried beta blockers? I was prescribed them for anxiety, but they sorted out my migraines too

Inmy40 · 21/07/2022 16:20

Have you tried Amitriptyline? It’s prescribed as a migraine preventative but it’s also an anti depressant.

StarCourt · 21/07/2022 16:22

I've just been prescribed venlafaxine for this very reason. I've had chronic daily migraine for years though and am finally getting medical Botox on Monday

I’ve had both Amitriptyline and beta blockers. Neither worked :-(. Will look up venlafaxine now

Sorry should have said I've tried beta blockers and amitryptaline too and loads of other preventatives which didn't work

Maddogsandtoplessenglishmen · 21/07/2022 16:30

Have you tried sumatriptan or any of the other triptans?

Antidepressants did nothing whatsoever for my migraines but you might find something different?

Footballmatchdilemma · 21/07/2022 16:31

I tried triptans but I’m looking for a preventative really

StarCourt · 21/07/2022 16:33

Sumatriptan works for me if I take it quick enough. If not I'm just vomitting it back up. But of course triptans aren't preventatives

cestlavielife · 21/07/2022 16:34

See a headache neurologist and look at migraine trust
There are so many more to try including cgrp injections
Dd has tried many
now on pizotifen seems to be helpful

Copernico · 21/07/2022 16:36

Topiramate is the only thing that’s ever worked for me.

StrangeCondition · 21/07/2022 16:36

Low dose propanolol for me, was prescribed it for migraines, been on it 2 years and haven't had a migraine since

StarCourt · 21/07/2022 16:37

Also tried atenolol, propranolol, clonidine, topiramate. Candesartan,

Skylab12 · 21/07/2022 16:40

I've just been prescribed Mirtazapine which is an SSRI. I can't take triptans as I have migraine with aura and I've tried Topiramate in the past as a preventative but had really bad side effects. Nervous to start taking an anti depressant but keeping my fingers crossed 🤞

StarCourt · 21/07/2022 16:41

Oh and pizotefen and mirtazspine. None worked for me

StarCourt · 21/07/2022 16:42

@Skylab12 I have migraine with aura and sumatriptan is my go to

fortifiedwithtea · 21/07/2022 16:53

I am blessed with epilepsy and migraine.

topiramate is the generic the brand name is Topamax its an anticonvulsant but used off license as a migraine preventative.

in May I saw my new neurologist as the previous had very sadly died. New guy insisted I drastically cut down caffeine. Honestly its been game changer up to yesterday when I had a few seizures in town and paramedics were called. I took my migraine meds went home and slept it off. I take Maxelt Meltz for migraine.

AndStand · 21/07/2022 17:00

Pizotifen worked for me for about 7 or 8 years. Then it stopped.
I now use a Cefaly as a preventative.

BeautifulBirds · 21/07/2022 17:20

Another for Cefaly!!

Skylab12 · 22/07/2022 15:12

The neurologist who diagnosed me said triptans were a no go for me due to increase in risk of stroke. I have vestibular migraines with aura so maybe that complicates things 🤷‍♀️ but then this was 7years ago and only dealt with GPs (who are clueless!) since so might be outdated advice.

Skylab12 · 22/07/2022 15:13

Sorry meant to tag @StarCourt

cestlavielife · 23/07/2022 14:43

Goid luck
It is a matter of trial
Toprimate was awful for dd
Cgrp somewhat good but facial pain

Badtasteflump · 23/07/2022 14:53

How old are you OP? I started getting hideous frequent migraines in my early 40's. They was caused by the Peri-menopause and hrt stopped them.

Copernico · 21/07/2022 16:36

Topiramate is the only thing that’s ever worked for me.

Topiramate works for me. But had to come off it due to the side effects.

Currently on Pregabalin. Waiting to see neurologist as it doesn't really work and there's nothing else GP can give me as I refuse to take beta blockers. (Was previously told I couldn't take them due to asthma. I've been told it's something else which by some miracle, means I can take them, even though my breathing is awful at the moment)

Footballmatchdilemma · 23/07/2022 23:58

@Badtasteflump I’m 45, so it may well be perimenopause. No other symptoms though - how would I know if it was that?

Have you looked into Botox for migraines? I get 39 injections from a neurologist & it’s helped me a lot.
