Your favourite animal charities

I am looking to set up one or two direct debits to animal charities. I'd like at least one to be focussed on dogs. Could anyone recommend any such charities that are not bogus and that do great work? I'd rather avoid the big ones e.g. RSPCA or Kennel Club because they already have a ton of money. I'm looking for smaller charities that you either volunteered for, or know someone at, or just that you know put most of the money towards the animals (rather than big salaries, fancy marketing, etc). Any suggestions? They can be based anywhere in the world. Thanks.

Dogs 4 rescue based in Manchester take on dogs that can't cope in Kennels and ones that struggle to find a home/keep getting returned - basically dogs on their last chance, and they rehabilitate them by using a kennel free pack method - the other dogs do most of the rehabilitation. The videos on their Facebook page are like magic of how scared and mistreated dogs arrive compared to how they turn out. It might take weeks or months or a dog might never leave to a new home but they're all loved and cared for.

I've always been very impressed with Brooke www.thebrooke.org
They work all over the world to improve the lives of working animals (mainly horses and donkeys). Maybe doesn't fit your wanting to avoid the 'big' charities but they do great work for both people and animals.

The one who feeds, neuters and treats street dogs in Sri Lanka, dog star.reqd the story on their site of how they got started, very moving. Plus they use local people and help educate on treatment of dogs. Very in need at moment as Sri Lanka is in period of unrest again.
I used to support wspa who have changed their name now. Otherwise compassion in world farming is a very important one, dealing with real issues not pie in the sky ones.

I support the Lord Whisky sanctuary in Kent, small independant charity.

Mdzananda Animal Clinic is a vet and shelter which does great work in a really deprived and impoverished community.

Facebook Mdzananda Animal Clinic
Or mdzananda.co.za

(Bastard site won't let me post links)

MarmiteyCrumpets · 21/07/2022 10:02

^they receive no government funding and 5 quid /ZAR100 a month would make an impact

We support a little cat rescue in Wales called Ty Nant

Hoppinggreen · 21/07/2022 10:04

I prefer to donate/help a local small charity. Maybe see if there is one local to you?

StarDolphins · 21/07/2022 10:06

Freshfields Animal Sanctuary are amazing
Allycats (on FB) this lady is nothing short of amazing, literally lives for these cats & she is the most devoted I’ve ever seen.
Oakwood Dog Rescue are also amazing, work tirelessly & seem to struggle as the dogs aren’t ‘pretty’ but they work so hard.
Many Tears are good too.

ChinBristles · 21/07/2022 10:19

This place is great. A lady set it up in her house in the early 1980s and it's grown since then. We got our old 3 legged cat Lucy from there and all our rescue cats since. I also take all my old towels, blankets and pillows to them.

I support dogs trust by sponsering two dogs and a facebook group called save our spaniels which rescues dogs from kill stations in Spain and rehomes in the UK.

Isseywith3witchycats · 21/07/2022 10:28

englishbarncats on facebook this is a lady who feeds a feral colony on a farm, rescues and rehomes stray cats in the manchester area with no funding other than her wages from work and donations from supporters she is an amazing lady and most of the cats she helps are ferals or strays out in the streets (even though i work for another cat rescue) or Ally b who is another lady in Bradford who helps stray cats in Bradford there is real problem there and once again she only gets support from donations small fundraisers and her own wages

Barking Mad do amazing work to help Romanian street and abandoned dogs. They're always inundated and that's where I got my lovely girl from.

KisstheTeapot14 · 21/07/2022 11:21

Local sanctuaries always need a helping hand.

Ashbourne Animal rescue are ours and they do great Christmas cards too! (Yes, I know it's July!)

KisstheTeapot14 · 21/07/2022 11:23

Various Greyhound rescue centres also do a great job, in fact there are rescue centres for all types and breeds if you wanted to go down that line.

I got my niece a year subscription for Dog's Trust one Christmas, they do fantastic work.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 21/07/2022 11:30

Starfish Dog Rescue starfishdogrescue.co.uk/index.html. Completely focussed on the dogs.

MRSAHILL · 21/07/2022 11:37

Carla Lane animals in need Liverpool. They are a non profit charity and they help the animals no one wants. They work so hard and are so very kind to the animals, never putting them down. In fact, they rescue dogs from other "kill shelters" where they would be put down after a certain amount of time. These people are the hardest working and have the biggest hearts ever. Please, please support them if you can.
