I am looking to set up one or two direct debits to animal charities. I'd like at least one to be focussed on dogs. Could anyone recommend any such charities that are not bogus and that do great work? I'd rather avoid the big ones e.g. RSPCA or Kennel Club because they already have a ton of money. I'm looking for smaller charities that you either volunteered for, or know someone at, or just that you know put most of the money towards the animals (rather than big salaries, fancy marketing, etc). Any suggestions? They can be based anywhere in the world. Thanks.

The Gambia horse and donkey trust. They do incredible work caring for all kinds of animals in a country where there are very few vets and very outdated ideas about animals. Some of their cases are truly heartbreaking

They take in horses, donkeys, camels, dogs, cats - and sometimes wildlife too, they recently had an orphaned monkey and were looking out for and feeding some hyenas. They educate owners wherever they can about properly fitting tack, handing out donkey sized bits and head collars and teaching owners about equine welfare.

They also loan donkeys to people on the proviso that they are looked after properly (and they do check and take the donkeys away if they’re not being cared for) so that people can be more supported to lift themselves out of poverty. They run neutering clinics, and they look after a pack of beach dogs, making sure they are well cared for. The vet staff are volunteers and they’re so dedicated.

I support SPANA, a charity to care for working animals in North Africa, a local cat sanctuary called Four Paws (in Oxfordshire), and my town’s animal sanctuary. All great causes doing fantastic work.

The one who feeds, neuters and treats street dogs in Sri Lanka, dog star.reqd the story on their site of how they got started, very moving. Plus they use local people and help educate on treatment of dogs. Very in need at moment as Sri Lanka is in period of unrest again.
I used to support wspa who have changed their name now. Otherwise compassion in world farming is a very important one, dealing with real issues not pie in the sky ones.

I donate to Dog Star who I think you are talking about, seems like a good charity, Sri Lanka is not in a good place at the moment Sad

www.rescueremedies.co.uk are the rescue where we got two of the best dogs in the world from ❤Run by Lynne and an amazing team of volunteers they are a fabulous charity, rehoming the type of dogs that are sadly often overlooked and may well otherwise be put to sleep. Lifelong support and advice are available to adopters.

British Hen Welfare Trust www.bhwt.org.uk are another small animal charity that we support. They rehome ex battery hens and promote and give advice on improving the welfare of hens. We've had a number of ex battery hens from them - fabulous Girls! The founder, Jane, even took the time to have a chat with me on the phone when one of our first Girls became unwell, that meant a lot to me.

I support National Animal Welfare Trust www.nawt.org.uk/

and Chaldon Animal Sanctuary which not a registered charity or rehoming centre but takes in pets that would otherwise be killed, like dogs that have behavioural issues or have come from overseas where they would have died. They stay there and live out their lives with love and care.
