In fact, Bill Bryson talks about seeing a "mom" in Walmart. Her kids were called "Bonnie, Lonnie, Donnie, Sonnie and Tammy-Wynette"

I like the Twitter account "Crap on LinkedIn". Send them the worst motivational quotes or virtue signalling that you see!

I'm addicted to this YouTube
She doesn't speak or show her face and it's incredibly relaxing, just showing her cooking and daily routines in Japan

https://youtube.com/channel/UC_RDtmUq7RISJ4mFKAhjzTg

I've just sat and watched one of her videos, Night routine after working. Oh my it was surprisingly relaxing, almost fell asleep. Thank you for sharing the link and I look forward to watching some more

Sallycinnamum · 20/07/2022 19:00

Has anyone mentioned the elevator game yet? I lost hours recently reading up on it.

costamum · 20/07/2022 19:04

This is amazing! May I also add the Delphi murders - the unresolved case of the 2 girls on the bridge in Indiana?

FictionalCharacter · 20/07/2022 19:12

Some of these are really nasty though. Why does anyone want to read about horrible tortures and murdered children?
Numbers stations aren’t a conspiracy theory! The content of the messages will never be known, but it’s well known that they definitely are messages, and we know who sends them https://warontherocks.com/2018/05/explaining-the-mystery-of-numbers-stations/

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 20/07/2022 19:20

Omg OP, there are not enough hours in the day.

<wiggles fingers ready for typing> now, where to start…

The beauty of a list is that you can pick and choose what interests you in particular.

Work2live · 20/07/2022 21:23

I find reading about conspiracy theories particularly fascinating so thank you for the list OP!

One I haven’t seen mentioned is the disappearance/murder of Judy Smith.

It’s one of the most confusing cases I’ve ever read about. None of it adds up.

CalmDownKaren · 20/07/2022 22:47

Quite honestly the best list ive ever seen. Will keep me googling for days 😊

Mamaneedsgin · 20/07/2022 23:08

This is a fascinating list, thank you!

I’d add the story of Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon, young Dutch students who disappeared while hiking the El Pianista trail in Panama. I lost several hours reading a blog on theories about what happened to them.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 20/07/2022 23:29

Under websites
Scottish Library maps

I spend hours finding places I know and then seeing what they looked like in 1850 or 1910

forgot to add the link

Thanks @ChampagneCommunist - an ironic sentiment given your username!
I would like to accept my award from Kate Middleton - is that ok given she's not actually royal by blood?!

Amazing now off to google whether non-blood royals are allowed to give knight/dame hoods and will see where that takes me.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 20/07/2022 23:40

Yesterday I spent hours reading about spontaneous combustion

Yep. Me too. Love old railway lines and toggling what's built on them now.

Love this thread op, can you update your list at some point adding in everyone's suggestions?

My contribution - Atlas Obscura.

FlappyFish · 20/07/2022 23:53

Fan fiction is my rabbit hole.

It has been figured out now, but the Dyatlov pass

MotherofPearl · 20/07/2022 23:57

What about cults?

Waco Siege
Jonestown/Jim Jones

Wideawakeandconfused · 21/07/2022 00:01

Years before Tiger King I discovered the rabbit hole of privately owned exotic animals in America. It’s fascinating that so many people own lions, tigers and bears…! And scary. And those poor animals. Luckily there are many rescue centres (including Carol’s).

I just wanted to say it occurs to me that there are still people living affected by some of these crimes/missing people. I'm not suggesting this list is just some kind of light entertainment. Some of these tragedies/crimes/perpetrators/miscarriages of justice need to be kept in the public eye/discussed so we can learn and do better.
I hope no-one finds my list insensitive, apologies if so.

For this reason I'd like to add the disappearance and death of 14 year old Noah Donohoe to your list please, OP.

Please be aware that the "Junko Furuta" case is very upsetting and disturbing especially as she didn't get justice.
Remember that things you read cannot be unread and this is the most horrifying thing I have ever read despite indulging in my fair share of true crime.

The only other case that affected me like that is of Sweet Fanny Adams - I had no idea that is where the saying came from, poor girl.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 22/07/2022 09:16

Me neither. Glad the murderer was found guilty and hanged/hung.
